Deuteronomy 12 … Consider Him Who Chooses the Place

We are instructed in God’s Word to seek the LORD [1 Chronicles 16:11, 1 Chronicles 22:19, Psalm 14:2]; but it is to be in the Place He Chooses.

You shall not act like this toward the Lord your God. But you shall seek the Lord at the place which the Lord your God will choose from all your tribes, to establish His name there for His dwelling, and there you shall come. [12:4-5]

Such lavish grace the LORD has extended, inviting the sinner to seek Him, to experience His presence, rest, and security in the Place He Chooses; the Place where His Name will dwell, His people will worship as distinct and separate from the world, and enjoy His fellowship in His sanctified and holy Place.

Consider Him Who Chooses the Place

  • He Chooses the Place, not man.
    • You shall not do at all what we are doing here today, every man doing whatever is right in his own eyes; [12:8]
  • He Chooses the Place of rest and security.
    • When you cross the Jordan and live in the land which the Lord your God is giving you to inherit, and He gives you rest from all your enemies around you so that you live in security, [12:10]
  • He Chooses the Place where His Name will dwell.
    • …then it shall come about that the place in which the Lord your God will choose for His name to dwell, [12:11]
  • He Chooses the Place of worship.
    • …there you shall bring all that I command you: your burnt offerings and your sacrifices, your tithes and the contribution of your hand, and all your choice votive offerings which you will vow to the Lord. [12:11]
  • He Chooses the Place to be distinct and separate.
    • Be careful that you do not offer your burnt offerings in every cultic place you see, 14 but in the place which the Lord chooses [12:13]
  • He Chooses the Place of fellowship.
    • But you shall eat them before the Lord your God in the place which the Lord your God will choose, [12:18]
  • He Chooses the Place to be sanctified and holy.
    • Only your holy things which you may have and your votive offerings, you shall take and go to the place which the Lord chooses. [12:26]

How do we respond to Him Who Chooses the Place?

He is the same yesterday and today and forever [Hebrews 13:8]. He does not change as He continues to invite sinners to seek Him, to experience His presence, rest, and security in the Place He Chooses; the Place where His Name will dwell, His people will worship as distinct and separate from the world, and enjoy His fellowship in His sanctified and holy Place.

  • He Chooses the Place, not man.
    • They took Jesus, therefore, and He went out, bearing His own cross, to the place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha. 18 There they crucified Him… 32 So the soldiers came, and broke the legs of the first man and of the other who was crucified with Him; 33 but coming to Jesus, when they saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs… 36 For these things came to pass to fulfill the Scripture, “Not a bone of Him shall be broken.” 37 And again another Scripture says, “They shall look on Him whom they pierced.” [John 19:17-18, 32-33, 36-37]
  • He Chooses the Place of rest and security.
    • …let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead—by this name this man stands here before you in good health. 11 He is the stone which was rejected by you, the builders, but which became the chief corner stone. 12 And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.” [Acts 4:10-12]
  • He Chooses the Place where His Name will dwell.
    • Do you not know that you are a temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? [1 Corinthians 3:16]
    • Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, [Ephesian 1:3-4]
  • He Chooses the Place of worship.
    •  Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe Me, an hour is coming when neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. 22 You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers. 24 God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” [John 4:21-24]
  • He Chooses the Place to be distinct and separate.
    • For we are the temple of the living God; just as God said, “I will dwell in them and walk among them;
And I will be their God, and they shall be My people.
17 “Therefore, come out from their midst and be separate,” says the Lord.
      “And do not touch what is unclean;
      And I will welcome you.
18 “And I will be a father to you,
And you shall be sons and daughters to Me,”
      Says the Lord Almighty.”
      [2 Corinthians 6:16-18]
  • He Chooses the Place of fellowship.
    • …that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death; [Philippians 3:10]
  • He Chooses the Place to be sanctified and holy.
    • By this will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. [Hebrews 10:10]
    • but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; 16 because it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.” [1 Peter 1:15-16]

Let us pay close attention Him Who Chooses the Place; we must be careful to come to Him in the way He commands for there is no other way.

Whatever I command you, you shall be careful to do; you shall not add to nor take away from it. [12:32]

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.” [John 14:6]
