Three days later they were still trying to figure it out, (14:14 NLT).

Much of today’s reading left me feeling very much as I imagine the thirty companions surely felt, confused and incapable of ever being able to figure it all out.

Yesterday in Judges 13, as we considered Him, Incomprehensible, we were introduced to His Name, too Wonderful to understand.

His Name expounds His Nature and Character as well as His Ways. His Name is forever in perfect keeping with His Ways. His Name and His Ways are Incomprehensible.

Consider His Incomprehensible Ways

 However, his father and mother did not know that it was of the LORD, for He was seeking an occasion against the Philistines. Now at that time the Philistines were ruling over Israel, (14:4).

Were you left with more questions than answers? For instance, how was the apparent weakness of a man, consecrated from birth, to be used as God’s occasion against the enemy? Some questions will remain unanswered. After all, Samson’s own parents were left unaware.

We will not always know what He is up to… His Ways are Incomprehensible.

We will not always understand His plans… His Ways are Incomprehensible.

We will not always recognize His purpose… His Ways are Incomprehensible.

While there is much about the LORD’s ways we will not know, understand or be able to recognize, we can be certain His Ways, though Incomprehensible, are always just, righteous and upright. His Incomprehensible Ways are invariably in keeping with His character, perfect and kind in all His deeds.

“The Rock! His work is perfect,
For all His ways are just;
A God of faithfulness and without injustice,
Righteous and upright is He,” (Deuteronomy 32:4).

The Lord is righteous in all His ways
And kind in all His deeds, (Psalm 145:17).

How do we respond to His Incomprehensible Ways?

We can be honest with God about our questions, but we must never allow our questions to overshadow our faith. The fact that His Ways are Incomprehensible should strengthen our faith, for He would not be much of a God if we could explain Him fully in our finite minds.

When we don’t know, understand or recognize His Incomprehensible Ways, faith must step in with assurance and conviction.

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen, (Hebrews 11:1).

• When we don’t understand what He is up to, in faith let us give thanks and proclaim His goodness.
  • Oh give thanks to the Lord, for He is good,
    For His lovingkindness is everlasting.
    ² Let the redeemed of the Lord say so… (Psalm 107:1-2).

• When we don’t understand His plans, we must refuse to challenge His wisdom, and trust His plans for our future.
  • “For I know the plans that I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope,” (Jeremiah 29:11).

• We may not always recognize His purpose, but we can trust His purpose will always prevail.
  • Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the LORD’s purpose that prevails, (Proverbs 19:21 NIV).

• When His Ways are Incomprehensible, by faith we know He will work all things together for His good and perfect purpose.
  • And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose, (Romans 8:28).

Faith does not merely seek answers to our questions, faith seeks Him; and He rewards us when we come to Him in faith. His Ways are Incomprehensible!

And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him, (Hebrews 11:6).

May we daily grow in amazement and gratitude for His Incomprehensible Ways!
