And David arose and went with all the people who were with him to Baale-judah, to bring up from there the ark of God which is called by the Name, the very name of the Lord of hosts who is enthroned above the cherubim, (6:2).
Today is Christmas Eve 2019, the time we celebrate and think much about the Son of God leaving His rightful place in heaven to come to earth, to be born as a humble babe in a manger. But today in 2 Samuel 6, we see Him Enthroned.
He is not Enthroned by man; He is God, the Lord of hosts, Enthroned from all eternity.
Consider Him Enthroned
And this season is the perfect time to consider Him Enthroned, to meditate on Him as revealed in His Holy Word.
Micaiah said, “Therefore, hear the word of the Lord. I saw the Lord sitting on His throne, and all the host of heaven standing by Him on His right and on His left, (2 Kings 22:19).
The Lord is in His holy temple; the Lord’s throne is in heaven; (Psalms 11:4).
In the year of King Uzziah’s death I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, lofty and exalted, with the train of His robe filling the temple. 2 Seraphim stood above Him, each having six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. 3 And one called out to another and said
“Holy, Holy, Holy, is the Lord of hosts,
Yhe whole earth is full of His glory.”
And the foundations of the thresholds trembled at the voice of him who called out, while the temple was filling with smoke. 5 Then I said,
“Woe is me, for I am ruined!
Because I am a man of unclean lips,
And I live among a people of unclean lips;
For my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts,” (Isaiah 6:1-5),
Thus says the Lord, “Heaven is My throne and the earth is My footstool.
Where then is a house you could build for Me?
And where is a place that I may rest?
2 For My hand made all these things,
Thus all these things came into being,” declares the Lord…
“But to this one I will look,
To him who is humble and contrite of spirit, and who trembles at My word,” (Isaiah 66:1-2).
“I kept looking
Until thrones were set up,
And the Ancient of Days took His seat;
His vesture was like white snow
And the hair of His head like pure wool.
His throne was ablaze with flames,
Its wheels were a burning fire.
10 “A river of fire was flowing
And coming out from before Him;
Thousands upon thousands were attending Him,
And myriads upon myriads were standing before Him;
The court sat,
And the books were opened,” (Daniel 7:9-10).
“But when the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, then He will sit on His glorious throne.32 All the nations will be gathered before Him; and He will separate them from one another, as the shepherd separates the sheep from the goats;” (Matthew 25:31-32).
Now the main point in what has been said is this: we have such a high priest, who has taken His seat at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens,2 a minister in the sanctuary and in the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, not man, (Hebrews 8:1-2).
Immediately I was in the Spirit; and behold, a throne was standing in heaven, and One sitting on the throne, (Revelation 4:2).
Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat upon it, from whose presence earth and heaven fled away, and no place was found for them.12 And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds… 15 And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire, (Revelation 20:11-12, 15).
How do we respond to Him Enthroned?
How can we not tremble before Him as we read of Him Enthroned? We can only approach Him as He has decreed in His Word. Consider the priest, Uzzah, who with good intentions reached out to steady the ark, and was immediately struck dead.
But when they came to the threshing floor of Nacon, Uzzah reached out toward the ark of God and took hold of it, for the oxen nearly upset it. 7 And the anger of the Lord burned against Uzzah, and God struck him down there for his irreverence; and he died there by the ark of God, (6:6-6).
Good intentions do not grant us access to Him Enthroned. We cannot approach Him, unless we come in His Way as given in His Word. The ark was not to be carried in a cart, even if it was a new cart. Man-made ways of approaching God are unacceptable.
You shall cast four gold rings for it and fasten them on its four feet, and two rings shall be on one side of it and two rings on the other side of it. 13 You shall make poles of acacia wood and overlay them with gold. 14 You shall put the poles into the rings on the sides of the ark, to carry the ark with them. 15 The poles shall remain in the rings of the ark; they shall not be removed from it, (Exodus 25:12-15).
We too have been shown the way to approach Him. Our own man-made religion, beliefs and philosophies are not accepted by Holy God; it is only as He has decreed, through His Son, Jesus Christ, that we are able to come to the Father.
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me,” (John 14:6).
May we humble ourselves today as we come to Him, the babe born in Bethlehem, who humbled Himself that we might be saved.
“But to this one I will look,
To him who is humble and contrite of spirit, and who trembles at My word,” (Isaiah 66:2).
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God, (John 1:1).
Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus,6 who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. 8 Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross, (Philippians 2:5-8).
May we adore Him as we consider Him Enthroned, Who came as the humble babe in a manger to rescue us from our sins. Oh, let us revere Him Enthroned in our hearts and lives, not just at Christmas time, but each and every day.
But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord, (1 Peter 3:15 NIV).
