Numbers 24 … Consider Him Who Has Dominion

Balaam, the pagan prophet, who had persisted in his practice of sorcery with the use of omens, is overcome by the Spirit of God and opens his mouth with prophetic utterance.

When Balaam saw that it pleased the Lord to bless Israel, he did not go as at other times to seek omens but he set his face toward the wilderness. And Balaam lifted up his eyes and saw Israel camping tribe by tribe; and the Spirit of God came upon him. He took up his discourse and said, (24:1-2).

Every bit of Balaam’s discourse speaks of the LORD’s rule and Dominion; although often not acknowledged and frequently ignored; although it may seem as if He is far off and not near, “I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near;” (24:17), He is on the throne and His Dominion has no rival.

Consider Him Who Has Dominion

  • He Has Dominion over every spirit.
    • …and the Spirit of God came upon him, (24:2).
  • He Has Dominion over the future.
    • “How fair are your tents, O Jacob,
      Your dwellings, O Israel! …
7 Water will flow from his buckets,
And his seed will be by many waters,
And his king shall be higher than Agag,
And his kingdom shall be exalted,”
  • He Has Dominion over every kingdom.
    • “A star shall come forth from Jacob,
A scepter shall rise from Israel,
And shall crush through the forehead of Moab,
And tear down all the sons of Sheth,”
  • He Has Dominion over every enemy.
    • “Edom shall be a possession,
Seir, its enemies, also will be a possession,
      While Israel performs valiantly.
19 One from Jacob shall have dominion,
And will destroy the remnant from the city,”
  • He Has Dominion over all of life.
    • “Alas, who can live except God has ordained it?” (24:23).

How do we respond to Him Who Has Dominion?

In considering Him Who Has Dominion over every spirit, the future, every kingdom, and enemy, and over all of life, are we submitting to His Dominion in our daily lives?

Does His Life in us have Dominion over our mind, will, emotions and actions? This can only be accomplished through faith in His finished work on the cross on our behalf. By faith, we know our sin was crucified with Christ and we are therefore free from sin and free to submit to His Dominion, that His life be made manifest through us.

For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; for he who has died is freed from sin, (Romans 6:5-7).

I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me, (Galatians 2:20).

In considering Him Who Has Dominion over every spirit, the future, every kingdom and enemy, and over all of life, why would we worry about anything? He Has Dominion!

As we journey through this life on earth, we will encounter injustices, sorrows, evil and the work of the enemy attempting to convince us God is not in control, has somehow abdicated His throne. But we know the truth; we must run to Him in faith, feed our faith in His Word and rest in His capable and dependable care, trusting Him Who Has Dominion. He will not let us fall.

As we grow in our knowledge of Him through the Holy Spirit’s enabling and the study of His Word, we will become convinced of His rule and His power, of Him Who Has Dominion. He is able!

Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to make you stand in the presence of His glory blameless with great joy, 25 to the only God our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen, (Jude 1:24).
