Judges 18 … Consider Him, the Self-Existent One

Judges 18 continues the disheartening account of the ends to which men will go, in their audacity and rebellion, to follow after their self-made gods.

I wasn’t sure whether to laugh or cry when reading the following,

He said, “You have taken away my gods which I made, and the priest, and have gone away, and what do I have besides?” (18:24).

It is both preposterous and grievous to speak of “my gods which I made.”

What kind of god is that? No wonder Micah hopelessly lamented of being destitute, “and what do I have besides?” The god he made was at the mercy of thieves. What kind of god succumbs to the hands of man?

But man cannot, and has not made the God of the Scriptures; He is the Maker of all things. He, and He alone is the Self-Existent One.

Consider Him, the Self-Existent One

Today, let us meditate on this essential, all-encompassing truth of Holy God; He is the Self-Existent One.

  • He is the Self-Existent One…
    • God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM,” (Exodus 3:14).
  • He is the Self-Existent One… Everlasting
    • Before the mountains were born
      Or You gave birth to the earth and the world,
      Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God,
       (Psalm 90:2).
  • He is the Self-Existent One… Never Changing
    • Of old You founded the earth,
      And the heavens are the work of Your hands.
      26 Even they will perish, but You endure;
      And all of them will wear out like a garment;
      Like clothing You will change them and they will be changed.
      27 But You are the same,
      And Your years will not come to an
      end, (Psalm 102:25-27).
  • He is the Self-Existent One… Giver of Life
    • For just as the Father has life in Himself, even so He gave to the Son also to have life in Himself; (John 5:26).
  • He is the Self-Existent One… Almighty
    • “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty,” (Revelation 1:8).

How do we respond to Him, the Self-Existent One?

How foolish to believe we can manage our lives apart from Him; or even worse, attempt to create a god we can manage. He is the Self-Existent One. He needs no help from us.

“If I were hungry I would not tell you,
For the world is Mine, and all it contains,
 (Psalm 50:12).

However, the Most High does not dwell in houses made by human hands; (Acts 7:48).

But we do try to help Him out, don’t we? When we attempt to handle life on our own; when we think we know better; when we make decisions without prayer, or even worse, in direct violation of His Word, as Micah did. And when we do, we find ourselves in the same pitiful state asking, “and what do I have besides?”

May we be changed, as we in faith believe His Word; He is the Self-Existent One. Who can compare? He is the Everlasting, Never Changing, Giver of Life, Almighty Self-Existent One.

‘I am the first and I am the last,
And there is no God besides Me.
‘Who is like Me?
(Isaiah 44:6-7).

Besides Him, who or what else do we need? What a privilege to depend on Him, the Self-Existent One for our every need, trusting Him in this life until we live with Him forever.

Today, may we worship in humility, awe and absolute dependence on Him, the Self-Existent One, convinced He needs nothing from us and we need absolutely everything from Him.

Let us ask Him to grow our faith, knowledge and understanding that we may speak from hearts full of adoration and praise to declare the works of Him, the Self-Existent One.

Whom have I in heaven but You?
And besides You, I desire nothing on earth.
26 My flesh and my heart may fail,
But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
27 For, behold, those who are far from You will perish;
You have destroyed all those who are unfaithful to You.
28 But as for me, the nearness of God is my good;
I have made the Lord God my refuge,
That I may tell of all Your works,
 (Psalm 73:25-28).
