1 Kings 1 … Consider Him Who Grants the Right of Rule

Now King David was old, advanced in age;… Now Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, “I will be king…” (1:1, 5).

Yet another son attempts to usurp King David’s throne. Talk about history repeating itself!

And perhaps from man’s perspective, Adonijah as the succeeding king made sense. He was handsome (a quality deemed a desirable asset in kings), and with his authoritative demeanor gained the support of two of David’s influential leaders. Plans were quickly put in place to garner the backing of many of the king’s sons and men of Judah, (1:9).

Although scholars agree it is likely Adonijah was the next in line as heir to the throne, it was Solomon, the younger son, who had been chosen as David’s successor and Granted the Right to Rule.

Consider Him Who Grants the Right of Rule

Man’s perspective, aptitudes and conspiracies will never overturn the will of God. God and God alone Grants the Right to Rule.

“But the word of the Lord came to me, saying, ‘…Behold, a son will be born to you, who shall be a man of rest; and I will give him rest from all his enemies on every side; for his name shall be Solomon, and I will give peace and quiet to Israel in his days. 10 He shall build a house for My name, and he shall be My son and I will be his father; and I will establish the throne of his kingdom over Israel forever.’” (1 Chronicles 22:8-10).

In examining 1 Chronicles 22:8-10, we identify God’s established and irrefutable parameters regarding who and what His appointed ruler would be and do; and it is within His boundaries and perfect wisdom that He Grants the Right of Rule.

  • His Right of Rule brings rest from every enemy, on every side.
    • And He said, “My presence shall go with you, and I will give you rest,” (Exodus 33:14).
  • His Right of Rule establishes peace and quiet.
    • The steadfast of mind You will keep in perfect peace,
      Because he trusts in You,
      (Isaiah 26:3).
  • His Right of Rule builds a house for His Name.
    • The Lord said to him, “…I have consecrated this house which you have built by putting My name there forever, and My eyes and My heart will be there perpetually,” (1 Kings 9:3).
  • His Right of Rule is granted to His Son.
    • “and just as My Father has granted Me a kingdom, I grant you 30 that you may eat and drink at My table in My kingdom, and you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel,” (Luke 22:29).
  • His Right of Rule establishes the throne of His kingdom forever.
    • Then the seventh angel sounded; and there were loud voices in heaven, saying,The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ; and He will reign forever and ever,” (Revelation 11:15).

How do we respond to Him Who Grants the Right of Rule?

The enemy’s tactics have not changed. There is always one waiting in an attempt to unseat His Right of Rule in this world and in our lives. We must begin by submitting by faith to His Rule in our lives, trusting His ways will always accomplish our salvation and sanctification.

Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you, (James 4:7)

  • As we submit to His Right of Rule, He brings rest from the enemy of our souls.
    • “These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world,” (John 16:33).
  • As we grow in His rest, His Right of Rule establishes peace and quiet regardless of the situation.
    • Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus, (Philippians 4:6-7).
  • Let us seek Him daily, that we may grow in our faith and His rest and peace. May His Right of Rule build a house for His Name in our very lives, that we may live sacrificial lives of service.
    • …you also, as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house for a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ, (1 Peter 2:5).
  • His Right of Rule is Granted to His Son; as His adopted children and co-heirs with Christ, may we be emboldened to seize our God-given authority and boldly stand against the schemes of the enemy.
    • Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil, (Ephesians 6:10-11).
  • We can walk securely all the days of our lives; His Right of Rule establishes the throne of His kingdom forever.
    • Therefore He is able also to save forever those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them, (Hebrews 7:25).

Oh Father, may we grow in our faith and understanding of all that we as Your children have in You, for You have Granted Your Right of Rule over every living thing and circumstance in our world. Oh, that we would daily live with confidence in Your love, power and authority. How can we not? Please let us never forget who we are in You, ever grateful for Your perfect love.

But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us, (Romans 8:37).

Let’s Grow Together!
