1 Kings 5 … Consider Him Who Gives Wisdom Just as He Promised

The Lord gave wisdom to Solomon, just as He promised him… (5:12).

I love studying the promises of God. And while reading this extraordinary account of His Promise to Give Wisdom, I was struck with this question: was this the first time He Gave this Promise; were there others? There are so many Prophetic Promises throughout the Holy Scriptures, but do any relate to what He gave Solomon?

Before this promise to Solomon, there were promises to his ancestors: David, Moses, Jacob, Isaac and Abraham, Adam and Eve. But did these have anything at all to do with Wisdom?

And then the following verses rushed my thoughts.

“…but we preach Christ crucified, to Jews a stumbling block and to Gentiles foolishness, 24 but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God [emphasis added],” (1 Corinthians 1:23-24)

“…attaining to all the wealth that comes from the full assurance of understanding, resulting in a true knowledge of God’s mystery, that is, Christ Himself, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge [emphasis added],” (Colossians 2:2-3).

His Promise to Give Wisdom has been His Promise since the foundation of the world, since mankind rebelled in the garden; and His Promise to Give Wisdom had been reiterated to every generation thereafter.

Consider Him Who Gives Wisdom Just as He Promised

“Christ Himself, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom” would be His ultimate Gift, fulfilling His plan to redeem mankind, to set apart and multiply a people for Himself, and to bless all who would place their faith in His Promise. His Wisdom would abundantly provide His Deliverance for all Eternity; our salvation through the shed blood of His perfect, sinless Son, Jesus Christ, accomplished by Him Who Gives Wisdom Just as He Promised.

  • His Gift of His Wisdom to Adam and Eve: His Promised Plan
    • “The Lord God said to the serpent, 15 ‘And I will put enmity
      Between you and the woman,
      And between your seed and her seed;
      He shall bruise you on the head,
      And you shall bruise him on the heel,’”
      (Genesis 3:14-15).
  • His Gift of His Wisdom to Abraham: His Promised Blessing
    • Now the Lord said to Abram,
      “And I will make you a great nation,
      And I will bless you,
      And make your name great;
      And so you shall be a blessing;
      And I will bless those who bless you,
      And the one who curses you I will curse.
      And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed,”
      (Genesis 12:2-3).
  • His Gift of His Wisdom to Isaac: His Promised Provision
    • “Sojourn in this land and I will be with you and bless you, for to you and to your descendants I will give all these lands, and I will establish the oath which I swore to your father Abraham. I will multiply your descendants as the stars of heaven, and will give your descendants all these lands; and by your descendants all the nations of the earth shall be blessed;” (Genesis 26:3-4).
  • His Gift of His Wisdom to Jacob: His Promised Abundance
    • And behold, the Lord stood above it and said, “I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie, I will give it to you and to your descendants. 14 Your descendants will also be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and in you and in your descendants shall all the families of the earth be blessed. (Genesis 28:13-14).
  • His Gift of His Wisdom to Moses: His Promised Deliverance:
    • “For the Lord will pass through to smite the Egyptians; and when He sees the blood on the lintel and on the two doorposts, the Lord will pass over the door and will not allow the destroyer to come in to your houses to smite you. 24 And you shall observe this event as an ordinance for you and your children forever,” (Exodus 12:23-24).
  • His Gift of His Wisdom to David: His Promised Eternal Kingdom
    • “… I will raise up your descendant after you, who will come forth from you, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever… 16 Your house and your kingdom shall endure before Me forever; your throne shall be established forever.”’” (Samuel 7:12-13, 16).

Every Promise given moved towards demonstrating His Wisdom for His People through His Plan and Purpose.

How do we respond to Him Who Gives Wisdom Just as He Promised?

Receiving His Promise begins with humility as demonstrated in Solomon’s request in 1 Kings 3:7, “…yet I am but a little child; I do not know how to go out or come in…”

Receiving His Promise is acquired through faith.

Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ, (Romans 10:17).

Receiving His Promise is rooted humility, in our understanding of His character, high and exalted, far above all creation, holy in all His ways.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,
And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding,
(Proverbs 9:10).

“For My thoughts are not your thoughts,
Nor are your ways My ways,” declares the Lord.
“For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
So are My ways higher than your ways
And My thoughts than your thoughts,”
(Isaiah 55:8-9).

A healthy fear of the Lord is a reverential posture, viewing Him in His holiness and omniscience with the understanding that we are utterly unworthy to come into His Presence, leading to a full acknowledgment that we have no hope but to place our faith in what He has foreknown since the foundation of the world, the Wisdom of His Promise extended to all of humanity since the Garden.

His Wisdom surpasses the wisdom of the world, but it is only received as we receive it with faith.

“For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19 For it is written, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, And the cleverness of the clever I will set aside… 20 Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21 For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not come to know God, God was well-pleased through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe… 30 But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption, 31 so that, just as it is written, “Let him who boasts, boast in the Lord,” (1 Corinthians 1:18-20, 30-31).

Let us come to His Word in faith, expecting and believing we will find Him Who Gives Wisdom Just as He Promised.

“For this reason we also constantly thank God that when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but for what it really is, the word of God, which also performs its work in you who believe,” (1 Thessalonians 2:13).

His Wisdom: His Plan, Blessing, Provision, Abundance, Deliverance and Eternal Kingdom fulfilled in Christ and His sacrifice for us on the cross is never what we would or could have planned. It is His Wisdom that decreed it so. What a glorious privilege to be one of His redeemed, to live our lives in praise and gratitude for Him Who Gives Wisdom Just as He Promised!

“…knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, 19 but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ. 20 For He was foreknown before the foundation of the world, but has appeared in these last times for the sake of you 21 who through Him are believers in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God…” (1 Peter 1:18-21).
