Psalm 64 and 65 … Consider His Awesome Deeds

By awesome deeds You answer us in righteousness, God of our salvation, (65:5).

One of the aspects of the Psalms that I find most encouraging is the pure transparency of the writers. David, as well as the other psalmists, do not hold back their anguish. And once again, in Psalm 64 and 65, David writes from that deep well of vulnerable uncertainty, without clarity regarding the outcome of his future. And in simplicity and candor, he voices his complaint to the only One Who can influence the course of events that have risen against him.

Hear my voice, God, in my complaint;
Protect my life from dread of the enemy.
Hide me from the secret discussion of evildoers,
From the restlessness of the workers of injustice,
Who have sharpened their tongues like a sword.
They aimed bitter speech as their arrows,
To shoot from concealment at the innocent;
Suddenly they shoot at him, and do not fear,
(64:1-4).

And we know it wasn’t that the Lord was unaware of the subversive work of David’s enemy, or the restlessness in David’s soul. But when God’s children approach Him in humility, in truth, and in faith, He moves on our behalf to respond.

But God will shoot an arrow at them;
Suddenly they will be wounded.
So they will make him stumble;
Their own tongue is against them;
All who see them will shake their heads,
(64:7-8).

And when God moves, people will be moved, moved to reverently fear and boldly witness as they consider His Awesome Deeds.

Then all people will fear,
And they will declare the work of God,
And will consider what He has done,
(64:9).

Consider His Awesome Deeds

Awesome: “causing or inducing awe; inspiring an overwhelming feeling of reverence, admiration, or fear.”

Truthfully there is no one Awesome but God, He alone is righteous and true; and all His Deeds are Awesome because of Who He Is.

His Awesome Deeds are clearly made known through the wonder of His creation.

Who establishes the mountains by His strength,
Who is encircled with might;
Who stills the roaring of the seas,
The roaring of their waves,
And the turmoil of the nations.
They who dwell at the ends of the earth stand in awe of Your signs;
You make the sunrise and the sunset shout for joy,
(65:6-8); (also see 65:9-13).

But truthfully, the majestic beauty of the seas, the mountains, the rivers, the meadows and the valleys are but a tiny speck of His might in light of His Awesome Deeds toward His crowning achievement in all of His creation, man.

  • By His Awesome Deeds He hears our prayers and draws us to Himself.
    You who hear prayer,
    To You all mankind comes,
    (65:2).
  • By His Awesome Deeds He forgives our sins.Wrongdoings prevail against me;
    As for our offenses, You forgive them,
    (65:3).
  • By His Awesome Deeds He chooses us to not only approach Him, but to dwell with Him.Blessed is the one You choose and allow to approach You;
    He will dwell in Your courtyards…
    (65:4).
  • By His Awesome Deeds He satisfies us with the holy goodness of His Presence.…We will be satisfied with the goodness of Your house,
    Your holy temple,
    (65:4).
  • By His Awesome Deeds He answers us in His righteousness and with His salvation.By awesome deeds You answer us in righteousness, God of our salvation, (65:5).

How do we respond to His Awesome Deeds?

Today, let’s devote time to truly considering His Awesome Deeds toward us! How did we ever become the recipients of His grace and choosing? But we have, if we have trusted Christ for our salvation. And that should move us! When we have been drawn into relationship with Holy God, when we have received the gift of being transformed by His Awesome Deeds, how can we not joyfully and fearlessly declare it before others?

Then all people will fear,
And they will declare the work of God,
And will consider what He has done.
10 The righteous person will be glad in the Lord and take refuge in Him;
And all the upright in heart will boast.
(64:9-10).

When we find ourselves feeling distant or apathetic in our faith, let us take time to meditate on His Awesome Deeds; from His creation of the universe, to our new creation in Christ; from every promise He has fulfilled to those we are still waiting for in faith. And as we consider His Awesome Deeds, and as we are reminded of His faithfulness to fulfill every single promise made, our faith will be strengthened for today and our future, and we be will be moved to respond in awe, praise and obedience.

There will be silence before You, and praise in Zion, God,
And the vow will be fulfilled for You,
(65:1).
