The Lord will stretch forth Your strong scepter from Zion, saying,
“Rule in the midst of Your enemies.”…
4 The Lord has sworn and will not change His mind,
“You are a priest forever
According to the order of Melchizedek.” (110:2, 4).
Psalm 110 is considered to be a Messianic psalm by both Jewish and Christian believers. Some New Testament verses immediately come to mind.
When Jesus was being grilled by the Pharisees with their never-ending attempts to trap Him by their questions (Matthew 22:15), Jesus turned the tables and referred to Psalm 110 when He asked His own question about the promised Messiah.
Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question: 42 “What do you think about the Christ, whose son is He?” They said to Him, “The son of David.” 43 He said to them, “Then how does David in the Spirit call Him ‘Lord,’ saying,
44 ‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at My right hand,
Until I put Your enemies beneath Your feet”’?
45 If David then calls Him ‘Lord,’ how is He his son?” 46 No one was able to answer Him a word, nor did anyone dare from that day on to ask Him another question, (Matthew 22:41-45).
The book of Hebrews, which expresses the supremacy of Christ, also makes reference to Psalm 110 in pointing out the superiority of Christ over that of the angels.
But to which of the angels has He ever said,
“Sit at My right hand,
Until I make Your enemies
A footstool for Your feet”?
14 Are they not all ministering spirits, sent out to render service for the sake of those who will inherit salvation? (Hebrews 1:13-14).
And the seventh chapter of Hebrews portrays the Christ as Eternal; although He descended from the tribe of Judah, He arose according to the likeness of Melchizedek.
Without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like the Son of God, he remains a priest perpetually… 14 For it is evident that our Lord was descended from Judah, a tribe with reference to which Moses spoke nothing concerning priests. 15 And this is clearer still, if another priest arises according to the likeness of Melchizedek, 16 who has become such not on the basis of a law of physical requirement, but according to the power of an indestructible life. 17 For it is attested of Him,
“You are a priest forever
According to the order of Melchizedek.” (Hebrews 7:14-17).
Jesus is proclaimed as the Eternal Son of God, Who came as Priest and Ruler over every nation, tribe and tongue. His Works are great and will be studied by all who delight in them.
Great are the works of the Lord;
They are studied by all who delight in them. (111:2).
Consider the Eternal Works of His Priestly Rule
He is Our Priest Who offered the perfect sacrifice for our sins; and He is our King Who will Rule for all of Eternity.
The Lord will stretch forth Your strong scepter from Zion, saying,
“Rule in the midst of Your enemies.”…
4 The Lord has sworn and will not change His mind,
“You are a priest forever
According to the order of Melchizedek.” (110:2, 4).
but He, having offered one sacrifice for sins for all time, sat down at the right hand of God, 13 waiting from that time onward until His enemies be made a footstool for His feet. 14 For by one offering He has perfected for all time those who are sanctified, (Hebrews 10:12-14).
- The Eternal Works of His Priestly Rule are splendid and majestic.

And His righteousness endures forever. (111:3).

How do we respond to the Eternal Works of His Priestly Rule?
Scripture says if we delight in His Eternal Works, we will desire to know and study them.
Great are the works of the Lord;
They are studied by all who delight in them. (111:2).
Oh, let us ask the Lord to grow our desire to study His Eternal Works that reveal Him as Priest and Ruler. For we know when we find our delight in Him, He will answer our desires.
Delight yourself in the Lord;
And He will give you the desires of your heart, (Psalm. 37:4).
And when we delight and study His great Works, we will grow in our fear and reverent awe for Him as He grows us in wisdom and understanding to obey His commands. Oh, let us ask His Holy Spirit to grow us in our times of study that we would praise Him and the Eternal Works of His Priestly Rule all the days of our lives.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom;
A good understanding have all those who do His commandments;
His praise endures forever. (111:10).
