Psalm 137 – 138 … Consider Him Who Will Accomplish What Concerns Us

The Lord will accomplish what concerns me;
Your lovingkindness, O Lord, is everlasting;
Do not forsake the works of Your hands.
(138:8).

I love when God repeats Himself, and today the last verse is a repeat from what we considered yesterday, where the truth of His Everlasting Lovingkindness is repeated 26 times. To see it expressed at the end of today’s reading was serendipitous, a touch of good fortune from our Good God. Psalm 138 is one of my most treasured psalms. And I heard myself say out loud after reading Psalm 137, with some exasperation, “Oh, I just wish I could focus on Psalm 138.”

After all, these two seem to have very little in common. Psalm 137 is written recalling the experience of captivity, a lament of the exiles and a desire for God’s justice. And Psalm 138 is written from a thankful heart for God’s deliverance, a prayer of thanksgiving for the Lord’s favor.

But as I read one of my favorite verses in all of Scripture, everything just seemed to make sense. A moment of divine serendipity. For even when we find ourselves in affliction and persecution, He is faithful, and He is always at work to Accomplish What Concerns Us.

The Lord will accomplish what concerns me… (138:8).

Consider Him Who Will Accomplish What Concerns Us

Psalm 138 is a psalm of David, a psalm written by the man after God’s own heart. So it is more than safe to assume that what concerned David was what was on the heart of his God. God’s Concerns were David’s Concerns. Other translations of this verse read, “The Lord will fulfill His purpose for me.” The Lord will fulfill His Concerns that have now become our Concerns because of His transforming work.

Accomplish
“584. גָּמַר gāmar: A verb meaning to complete, to perfect… The root idea of the word is to end. In two transitive uses, God is the subject. He will perfect that which concerns the psalmist and will complete (or perform) all things for him (Ps. 57:2[3]; 138:8),” Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance

How do we respond to Him Who Will Accomplish What Concerns Us?

It’s His Work to do, His Will to Accomplish. Our part is to ask, believe and receive our inheritance.

I will cry to God Most High,
To God who accomplishes all things for me.
He will send from heaven and save me;
He reproaches him who tramples upon me. Selah.
God will send forth His lovingkindness and His truth,
(Psalm 57:2-3).

also we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to His purpose who works all things after the counsel of His will, (Ephesians 1:11).

Because we know He is working in every situation, in every blessing and every trial, to Accomplish What Concerns us, He Will Accomplish His ultimate purpose for us… to be conformed to the image of our Savior. Oh such Lovingkindness!

Oh that we would truly trust Him to do what only He can do as we walk through life in faith. He is faithful to Accomplish What Concerns Us and will never forsake the work of His hands, to keep us and sanctify us entirely until He comes again as we look forward to the day when He will glorify us with Him forever in heaven.

The Lord will accomplish what concerns me;
Your lovingkindness, O Lord, is everlasting;
Do not forsake the works of Your hands.
(138:8).

And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. 29 For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren; 30 and these whom He predestined, He also called; and these whom He called, He also justified; and these whom He justified, He also glorified, (Romans 8:28-30).

When Christ, who is our life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory, (Colossians 3:4).

Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 Faithful is He who calls you, and He also will bring it to pass, (1 Thessalonians 5:23).
