Psalm 145 – 146  … Consider His Unsearchable Greatness

Great is the Lord, and highly to be praised,
And His greatness is unsearchable,
(145:3).

Have you ever gotten one of those gifts that come wrapped in a huge box, only to open it to find the pleasant surprise of a plethora of wrapped gifts inside? It’s exciting to pick each gift up and unwrap it to discover what’s inside, with the anticipation building as you reach in to pick up the next one. This morning was a little bit like that. Only this box is bottomless. If we were to recount the gifts of His Unsearchable Greatness, we would take an eternity to do so. Praise God, the day is coming when we will have exactly an eternity to do just that.

But today, with our finite minds and our limited understanding, let’s begin to unwrap some of the amazing treasures manifested in His Unsearchable Greatness.

Consider His Unsearchable Greatness

Both of today’s psalms are extensively packed with depictions of the riches of His Unsearchable Greatness. Rather than quoting every passage (for both psalms could certainly be completed quoted), I have tried to encapsulate the verses describing the many ways He has manifested His Unsearchable Greatness.

His Greatness is Unsearchable, though He is King of all the universe and highly to be praised, He has made Himself known to us as our God. (145:1-3)

His Greatness is Unsearchable, manifested in His mighty acts, His gloriously majestic splendor, His wonderful works, and His powerful and awesome greatness. (145:4-6)

His Greatness is Unsearchable, manifested in His lavishly abundant goodness, righteousness, grace, mercy, patience and lovingkindness. (145:7-8)

His Greatness is Unsearchable, manifested in His goodness to all and His mercies over all His works. (145:9)

His Greatness is Unsearchable, manifested in His kingdom that is worthy, glorious, mighty, majestic, everlasting, unrestrained and supreme forever. (145:10-13)

His Greatness is Unsearchable, manifested as He sustains and raises up all who fall and are bowed down. (145:14)

His Greatness is Unsearchable, manifested in His generous and bounteous provision willingly offered to satisfy the desire of every living thing.
(145:15-16)

His Greatness is Unsearchable, manifested in His righteousness and kindness in all His ways and deeds. (145:17)

His Greatness is Unsearchable, manifested as He comes near to fulfill desires, hear our cries, and save and keep all those who call upon Him in truth and reverent fear and love. (145:18-21)

His Greatness is Unsearchable, manifested in His faithful help and hope forever. (146:5-6)

His Greatness is Unsearchable, manifested as He liberally supplies justice, care, freedom, healing, love, protection and support for the oppressed, the hungry, the prisoner, the blind, the bowed down, the righteous, the stranger, the fatherless and the widow. (146:7-9)

How do we respond to His Unsearchable Greatness?

His Greatness truly is Unsearchable, but it is a worthy endeavor to dig in and contemplate His Unsearchable Greatness that He has manifested in our own life.

Perhaps today’s reading would prompt us to make our own personal list of how we have been the undeserving recipients of His Unsearchable Greatness.

And after spending time reflecting on His Greatness that is beyond our understanding, and after we pick ourselves up from being knocked off our feet, oh that we would respond exactly like David.

Let us extol Him (which literally means to raise high). That we would live, not just lifting His praises with our lips, but that He would be lifted high by the way we live, in our thoughts and words (our soul) and in the way we interact with others, that they too would hear and see His Unsearchable Greatness and bless His Holy Name forever and ever.

I will extol You, my God, O King,
And I will bless Your name forever and ever.
Every day I will bless You,
And I will praise Your name forever and ever…
21 My mouth will speak the praise of the Lord,
And all flesh will bless His holy name forever and ever,
(145:1-2, 21).

Oh may we never get over the fact that this Great God has made Himself known to us. How can we not praise Him with all that we are and as long as we have breath, for His Greatness is Unsearchable!

Praise the Lord!
Praise the Lord, O my soul!
I will praise the Lord while I live;
I will sing praises to my God while I have my being,
(146:1-2).

Great is the Lord, and highly to be praised,
And His greatness is unsearchable,
(145:3).
