Proverbs 14 … Consider Him, Our Trustworthy and Truthful Witness

A trustworthy witness will not lie,
But a false witness utters lies…
25 A truthful witness saves lives,
But he who utters lies is treacherous,
(14:5, 25).

In these days of uncertainty there are many times we have heard or even had the thought ourselves, “Nobody really knows what’s true.” There is little trust in the experts, the news organizations, the politicians. Where are we to go for truth? We do have the answer to that. There is only One Who knows what is True, and because He is Our Trustworthy and Truthful Witness, we can find rest and assurance in His Word.

And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth, (John 1:14).

How desperate we are for Truth, and this chapter of Proverbs once again lays out the marked contrast between those who build their lives on lies with those who are established in His Truth. Every Word of God is His Eternal Truth.

The sum of Your word is truth,
And every one of Your righteous ordinances is everlasting,
(Psalm 119:160).

And in His Grace, Jesus Christ, the Living Word came as Our Trustworthy and Truthful Witness.

For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ, (John 1:17).

Therefore Pilate said to Him, “So You are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say correctly that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice,” (John 18:37).

Consider Him, Our Trustworthy and Truthful Witness

  • He is Our Trustworthy Witness Who Will Not Lie
    • A trustworthy witness will not lie,
      But a false witness utters lies, (14:5).

      • Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me,” (John 14:6).
  • He is Our Truthful Witness Who Saves Us and Gives Us Eternal Life
    • A truthful witness saves lives,
      But he who utters lies is treacherous, (14:25).

      • And we know that the Son of God has come, and has given us understanding so that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life, (1 John 5:20).

How do we respond to Him, Our Trustworthy and Truthful Witness?

Instead of wringing our hands in worry about what is or is not true, let us go to the One Who is always Trustworthy and Truthful.

Let us daily ask Him to lead us and teach us in His Truth.

Lead me in Your truth and teach me,
For You are the God of my salvation;
For You I wait all the day,
(Psalm 25:5).

We all know how easily our hearts our tugged away by the lies and deceit of the world. Let us ask the Lord to unite our hearts to so fear His Holy Name that we would be discerning to know and walk in His truth

Teach me Your way, O Lord;
I will walk in Your truth;
Unite my heart to fear Your name,
(Psalm 86:11).

  • Let us call upon Him in Truth, that we may be heard.
    • The Lord is near to all who call upon Him,
      To all who call upon Him in truth,
      (Psalm 145:18).
  • Let us live His Truth that we may be a delight to Him.
    • Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord,
      But those who deal faithfully are His delight,
      (Proverbs 12:22).
  • Let us ask Him to grow us in His Truth that we would be able to truly worship Him.
    • “God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth,” (John 4:24).
  • Let us commit to continue in His Word that we would grow in our knowledge of Truth and be set free to follow Him.
    • So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, “If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free,” (John 8:31-32).
  • Let us depend on His Holy Spirit to guide us into His Truth.
    • “But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come,” (John 16:13).
  • Oh, let us never neglect His Word, that He would have His way in us as He sanctifies us in His Truth.
    • “Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth,” (John 17:17).

Let us ask Him to grow us in His image, that we would become Trustworthy and Truthful Witnesses as we live and love for His glory.

Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and truth, (1 John 3:18).

Let’s Grow Together!
