Proverbs 23 … Consider His Call to Live in His Sure Future and Hope

Do not let your heart envy sinners,
But live in the fear of the Lord always.
18 Surely there is a future,
And your hope will not be cut off,
 (23:17-18).

Eleven times in today’s reading we read of a father’s advice to his son that begins with the admonition, “Do not.” This chapter is laden with warnings of what is not wise behavior. This chapter is also filled with encouragement of His Sure Future and Hope, if we would but give our hearts to the Father and learn to delight and live in His ways.

Give me your heart, my son,
And let your eyes delight in my ways,
(23:26).

The Book of Proverbs is a collection of wise principles, and when applied and followed, result in the best way we can live this life. God promises His Sure Future and Hope for all of eternity. But we don’t just have assurance for the afterlife. If we will follow His wise counsel throughout our lifetime and answer His call to live in His Sure Future and Hope for each and every day we walk this earth, we will enjoy the blessing of living according to His Will.

As Solomon counsels his son, to “not” engage in a particular behavior, he is at the same time directing him to choose the wise option in lieu of that which is foolish.

And choosing the wise option always begins in the fear of the Lord.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,
And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding,
(Proverbs 9:10).

He Calls us to walk in the fear of the Lord and follow His counsel; and as we do, He will guide us into knowing and understanding Him, that we may also know and live in His Sure  Future and Hope.

16 And my inmost being will rejoice
When your lips speak what is right,
      (23:15-16).
  • Let us answer His Call as we intentionally listen and direct our hearts in His way, that we would Live in His Sure Future and Hope.
