A throne will even be established in lovingkindness,
And a judge will sit on it in faithfulness in the tent of David;
Moreover, he will seek justice
And be prompt in righteousness. (16:5).
The heading in my Bible for this chapter reads, “Prophecy of Moab’s Destruction.” And upon reading those words, I attempted to ready myself for what I would face in this chapter, fully expecting to be halted by the swift and complete annihilation that was to come upon Moab, this enemy of God.
And I was halted all right, but not by the judgment these ruthless enemies had earned. Instead I was stopped in my tracks by what I least expected; His Lovingkindness that would Establish His Throne.
In Isaiah’s day, when a nation was conquered, the new ruler would establish his throne in violence and heartless cruelty. Justice was never the motivating factor, only domination.
But even the Moabites would recognize His distinctive rule as they requested mercy and shelter until the oppressors disappeared from the land, awaiting His Throne to be Established in Lovingkindness.
“Let the outcasts of Moab stay with you;
Be a hiding place to them from the destroyer.”
For the extortioner has come to an end, destruction has ceased,
Oppressors have completely disappeared from the land, (16:4).
And I was grateful to be able to see His heart, even in His judgment on the nations who had so completely rebelled against Him, offering a place of refuge and hiding from the destroyer to all who would come to Him Who Will Establish His Throne in Lovingkindness.
Consider Him Who Will Establish His Throne in Lovingkindness
In the midst of His pronounced judgment, God speaks His Truth. He speaks of His Lovingkindness and Faithfulness, and through the throne of David, Justice and Righteousness would be substantiated as the True foundation of His Throne.
Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne;
Lovingkindness and truth go before You, (Psalm 89:14).
Every promise spoken of His Throne, Established in His Lovingkindness, points us to Jesus.
- The Father Established His Throne in Lovingkindness when He sent His Only Begotten Son.
- By this the love of God was manifested in us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him. 10 In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins, (1 John 4:16).
- The Son Established His Throne in Lovingkindness when He laid down His life for us while we were yet in our sins.
- “Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends,” (John 15:13).
- But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us, (Romans 5:8).
- The Holy Spirit Established His Throne in our spirits by His Lovingkindness as He drew us to faith in the Son Whom the Father Gave, that we would be born again of the Spirit
- Jesus answered and said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God… 5 Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not be amazed that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows where it wishes and you hear the sound of it, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going; so is everyone who is born of the Spirit.” 9 Nicodemus said to Him, “How can these things be?”… 16 For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life, (John 3:3, 5-9, 16).
As we look back on His promises fulfilled and look forward to every promise yet to be realized, we will of course see Jesus, Who Will Establish His Throne in Lovingkindness.
A throne will even be established in lovingkindness,
And a judge will sit on it in faithfulness in the tent of David;
Moreover, he will seek justice
And be prompt in righteousness. (16:5).
- He Will Establish His Throne in Lovingkindness; He is the Judge of all the world.
- A throne will even be established in lovingkindness,
And a judge will sit on it…
- A throne will even be established in lovingkindness,
“…God is now declaring to men that all people everywhere should repent, 31 because He has fixed a day in which He will judge the world in righteousness through a Man whom He has appointed, having furnished proof to all men by raising Him from the dead,” (Acts 17:30-31).
- He Will Establish His Throne in Lovingkindness; He is forever Faithful.
- A throne will even be established in lovingkindness,
And a judge will sit on it in faithfulness…
- A throne will even be established in lovingkindness,
It is a trustworthy statement: For if we died with Him, we will also live with Him;
12 If we endure, we will also reign with Him;
If we deny Him, He also will deny us;
13 If we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself, (2 Timothy 2:11-13).
- He Will Establish His Throne in Lovingkindness; He is from the line of David.
- A throne will even be established in lovingkindness,
And a judge will sit on it in faithfulness in the tent of David…
- A throne will even be established in lovingkindness,
The record of the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah, the son of David, the son of Abraham, (Matthew 1:1).
- He Will Establish His Throne in Lovingkindness; He will pursue Justice.
- A throne will even be established in lovingkindness,
And a judge will sit on it in faithfulness in the tent of David;
Moreover, he will seek justice…
- A throne will even be established in lovingkindness,
This was to fulfill what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet:
18 “Behold, My Servant whom I have chosen;
My Beloved in whom My soul is well-pleased;
I will put My Spirit upon Him,
And He shall proclaim justice to the Gentiles, (Matthew 12:17-18).
- He Will Establish His Throne in Lovingkindness; He will hasten Righteousness.
- A throne will even be established in lovingkindness,
And a judge will sit on it in faithfulness in the tent of David;
Moreover, he will seek justice
And be prompt in righteousness.
- A throne will even be established in lovingkindness,
And I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse, and He who sat on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and wages war, (Revelation 19:11).
How do we respond to Him Who Will Establish His Throne in Lovingkindness?
The truth is, we live in disheartening times; but we will be strengthened, encouraged and assured in Him as we walk by faith in His promises. Even when things don’t make sense, even when the love of many seems to have grown cold, and even when it seems that wickedness has the upper hand, we must not give up believing all that His Word guarantees that we have in Him.
but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name, (John 20:31).
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, 5 who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time,(1 Peter 1:3-5).
The day is coming when the Lamb of God Who takes away the sins of the world will take His rightful place as Judge in His Faithfulness, from the line of David, to pursue Justice and hasten Righteousness; and He Will Establish His Throne in Lovingkindness as He puts an end to the curse of sin and death, once and for all.
…he saw Jesus coming to him and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29).
There will no longer be any curse; and the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and His bond-servants will serve Him; (Revelation 22:3).
Until that day, let us not give in to discouragement or doubt, but let us believe His Word, that we would daily labor and strive to fix our hope on Him Who Will Establish His Throne in Lovingkindness.
For it is for this we labor and strive, because we have fixed our hope on the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of believers, (1 Timothy 4:10).
