and behold, the glory of the God of Israel was coming from the way of the east. And His voice was like the sound of many waters; and the earth shone with His glory, (43:2).
And just like that, all those precise plans and meticulous measurements made sense. All to prepare for the Return of His Glory. This was a welcome break indeed from the measuring rod.
Ezekiel’s vision of this temple is yet to be fulfilled, for no such magnanimous structure as depicted in his visions has been built. While a temple was constructed when the exiles returned under the leadership of Zerubbabel and Nehemiah, it was certainly not to the scale of the measurements given for this great edifice. And from chapter 38, God Himself spoke of “the latter years” (v7), “that day” (vs10,14,18,19), and “the last days” (v16).
Much of end times prophecy typically leaves me scratching my head. So today, I choose to leave interpretations of end times, the millennial kingdom, and the reinstatement of animal sacrifices to theologians and bible scholars. After all, that was never the objective of this three-year journey through the pages of His Holy Word. And one of the Truths I am repeatedly reminded of is that there are things about our Infinite God that He chooses to not fully disclose to our finite minds.
The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our sons forever, that we may observe all the words of this law, (Deuteronomy 29:29).
But oh, the things He has revealed are ours forever! And today, He has revealed the Return of His Glory.
Consider the Return of His Glory
It really feels like just too much to write about. And I have found myself often wondering what kind of man must Ezekiel have been to have received such a prestigious call and such a glorious privilege to be shown all that he saw and heard. But I digress.
Ezekiel’s prophecy began with his amazing vision of God’s Indescribable Glory (Ezekiel 1) but through the people’s persistent rebellion in spite of His constant warnings, the vision was given of His Glory Departing (Ezekiel 10). And now, after the LORD has proven His Word true through the prophecy and fulfillment of the fall of Jerusalem, He sends His messenger to a people despondent and in bondage. And the message of His promised Restoration to Make Himself Known crescendos to its pinnacle with the vision of the Return of His Glory.
And Ezekiel likens this experience to the indescribable vision he saw by the river Chebar. And what else could he do but fall on his face in worship?
And it was like the appearance of the vision which I saw, like the vision which I saw when He came to destroy the city. And the visions were like the vision which I saw by the river Chebar; and I fell on my face, (43:3).
As the people heard this prophecy, surely their hope would return. For when His new temple had been carefully measured and constructed, His Glory would Return through the same gate from which His Glory Had Departed.
Then the glory of the Lord departed from the threshold of the temple and stood over the cherubim. 19 When the cherubim departed, they lifted their wings and rose up from the earth in my sight with the wheels beside them; and they stood still at the entrance of the east gate of the Lord’s hovered over them, (Ezekiel 10:18-19).
Can you even begin to imagine the sensory overload as Ezekiel is carried into the inner court of the temple by the Spirit of God into the roar of His rushing voice and the brilliance of His shining light?
…And His voice was like the sound of many waters; and the earth shone with His glory… 4 And the glory of the Lord came into the house by the way of the gate facing toward the east. 5 And the Spirit lifted me up and brought me into the inner court; and behold, the glory of the Lord filled the house. 6 Then I heard one speaking to me from the house, while a man was standing beside me, (43:2, 4-6).
And as Ezekiel beholds the Return of His Glory, the voice of Almighty God speaks directly to His prophet.
He said to me, “Son of man, this is the place of My throne and the place of the soles of My feet, where I will dwell among the sons of Israel forever. And the house of Israel will not again defile My holy name, neither they nor their kings, by their harlotry and by the corpses of their kings when they die, 8 by setting their threshold by My threshold and their door post beside My door post, with only the wall between Me and them. And they have defiled My holy name by their abominations which they have committed. So I have consumed them in My anger. 9 Now let them put away their harlotry and the corpses of their kings far from Me; and I will dwell among them forever,” (43:7-9).
The Return of His Glory will fill the earth with His roaring voice and His brilliant light. And as He fills the temple with His Glory, He will establish His throne and dwelling place forever among His children.
And with the Return of His Glory there will be a return to Him, in repentance and godly sorrow, a return to obedience and worship as His people realize the depth of their iniquities and abominations before Holy God.
“As for you, son of man, describe the temple to the house of Israel, that they may be ashamed of their iniquities; and let them measure the plan. 11 If they are ashamed of all that they have done, make known to them the design of the house, its structure, its exits, its entrances, all its designs, all its statutes, and all its laws. And write it in their sight, so that they may observe its whole design and all its statutes and do them. 12 This is the law of the house: its entire area on the top of the mountain all around shall be most holy. Behold, this is the law of the house,” (43:10-12).
And the Return of His Glory will change everything. For in that day, the secret things will be revealed to those who acknowledge the shame of their grievous acts against Holy God; and in that day, His Holiness will become the undisputed law of His House.
How do we respond to the Return of His Glory?
As I had wondered about what kind of man Ezekiel was to have received such a prestigious call and such a glorious privilege to be shown all that he saw and heard, I realized, every single one of us who have trusted Jesus Christ for our salvation have received the same prestigious call to proclaim His Truth and the same glorious privilege to be shown His Indescribable Glory in the Word Who became flesh, the Son of God Who Is the exact representation of the radiance of God’s Glory.
And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth, (John 1:14).
in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world. 3 And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, (Hebrews 1:2-3).
And He came the first time as the Humble Servant Who gave His life that we might have His. But He is coming again, and when He comes again, all will fall on their face before Him when they see the Return of His Glory as He sits on His throne, Blessed, Honored and Glorified forever
And I saw between the throne (with the four living creatures) and the elders a Lamb standing, as if slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God, sent out into all the earth. 7 And He came and took the book out of the right hand of Him who sat on the throne. 8 When He had taken the book, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each one holding a harp and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. 9 And they sang a new song, saying,
“Worthy are You to take the book and to break its seals; for You were slain, and purchased for God with Your blood men from every tribe and tongue and people and nation.
10 “You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to our God; and they will reign upon the earth.”
11 Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne and the living creatures and the elders; and the number of them was myriads of myriads, and thousands of thousands, 12 saying with a loud voice,
“Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing.”
13 And every created thing which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all things in them, I heard saying,
“To Him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb, be blessing and honor and glory and dominion forever and ever.”
14 And the four living creatures kept saying, “Amen.” And the elders fell down and worshiped, (Revelation 5:6-14).
Please take time to consider what the end times mean for you personally.
If you are still uncertain of your eternal destiny, humbly confess your sins against Holy God, place your faith in the sacrificial death of the Lamb of God Who came to give His Life to save you and was raised again to conquer death, and you will be saved.
that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved, (Romans 10:9).
And for those of us who have trusted Christ’s sacrificial death for our sins, oh may we live every day mindful of the prestigious call in our lives to proclaim His Truth and the glorious privilege we have been granted to be shown His Indescribable Glory in Christ.
Let us not waste a moment, but that we would live as those who are always looking and always ready to answer the prestigious call we have received to share the hope we have in the Return of His Glory.
looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus, (Titus 2:13).
but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence, (1 Peter 3:15).
