“In that day I will raise up the fallen booth of David,
And wall up its breaches;
I will also raise up its ruins
And rebuild it as in the days of old…
14 “Also I will restore the captivity of My people Israel,
And they will rebuild the ruined cities and live in them;
They will also plant vineyards and drink their wine,
And make gardens and eat their fruit,” (9:11, 14).
The feelings I first had when launching into the prophecies of Amos returned; that jolt of being confronted with His Irrevocable Punishment assailed my senses once more as I read of His judgment that would utterly decimate the land and the people.
“Smite the capitals so that the thresholds will shake,
And break them on the heads of them all!
Then I will slay the rest of them with the sword;
They will not have a fugitive who will flee,
Or a refugee who will escape.
2 “Though they dig into Sheol,
From there will My hand take them;
And though they ascend to heaven,
From there will I bring them down.
3 “Though they hide on the summit of Carmel,
I will search them out and take them from there;
And though they conceal themselves from My sight on the floor of the sea,
From there I will command the serpent and it will bite them.
4 “And though they go into captivity before their enemies,
From there I will command the sword that it slay them,
And I will set My eyes against them for evil and not for good,” (9:1-4).
The captivity of the northern kingdom was not far in the distance. A generation would not pass before the Assyrian empire would brutally overthrow and capture every remaining survivor, and the prophecies that had been scorned as far-fetched during their time of overindulgent opulence, would be absolutely confirmed.
As I continued reading, I hoped, with little confidence, that the book would somehow end differently than it all began. Oh, me of little faith. For while His judgment will come, that is not where His Story ends. And in an instant, His grace, His mercy, and His faithfulness emerged, beyond what any may have ever seen or heard, beyond what any could even think to even imagine.
“Things which eye has not seen and ear has not heard,
And which have not entered the heart of man,
All that God has prepared for those who love Him,” (1 Corinthians 2:9).
Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us, (Ephesians 3:20).
Consider the Day of His Restoration
- On the Day of His Restoration He will Raise up the fallen.
- “In that day I will raise up the fallen booth of David…” (9:11).
-
- On the Day of His Restoration He will Repair the breaches.
“…And wall up its breaches…” (9:11).
- On the Day of His Restoration He will Repair the breaches.
- On the Day of His Restoration He will Rebuild the ruins.
- “…I will also raise up its ruins
And rebuild it as in the days of old,” (9:11).
- “…I will also raise up its ruins
- On the Day of His Restoration He will Regather His remnant.
- “That they may possess the remnant of Edom
And all the nations who are called by My name,”
Declares the Lord who does this, (9:12).
- “That they may possess the remnant of Edom
- On the Day of His Restoration He will Reverse the adversity.
- “The time will come,” says the LORD,
“when the grain and grapes will grow faster
than they can be harvested.
Then the terraced vineyards on the hills of Israel
will drip with sweet wine! (9:13 NLT).
- “The time will come,” says the LORD,
- On the Day of His Restoration He will Restore the captivity.
- “Also I will restore the captivity of My people Israel,
And they will rebuild the ruined cities and live in them…” (9:14).
- “Also I will restore the captivity of My people Israel,
-
- On the Day of His Restoration He will Replenish the land.
“…They will also plant vineyards and drink their wine,
And make gardens and eat their fruit,” (9:14).
- On the Day of His Restoration He will Replenish the land.
- On the Day of His Restoration He will Root His people in their land forever.
- “I will also plant them on their land,
And they will not again be rooted out from their land
Which I have given them,”
Says the Lord your God, (9:15).
- “I will also plant them on their land,
How do we respond to the Day of His Restoration?
In closing out this book, it will be prudent to reflect on what the Day of His Restoration means for us, individually.
On that day… For some, it will be a Day of Restoration, but not for all. For there will be those who are looking for the day of the Lord, but in actuality are headed for a terrifying reality.
Woe to you who are longing for the day of the Lord,
For what purpose will the day of the Lord be to you?
It will be darkness and not light; (Amos 5:18).
And it will only be a remnant who return to Him to escape His determined destruction.
A remnant will return, the remnant of Jacob, to the mighty God.
22 For though your people, Israel, may be like the sand of the sea,
Only a remnant within them will return;
A destruction is determined, overflowing with righteousness, (Isaiah 10:21-22).
And Jesus told us the only way to escape destruction is through the Narrow Gate, but sadly, only a remnant will enter and be saved.
“Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. 14 For the gate is narrow and the way is constricted that leads to life, and there are few who find it,” (Matthew 7:13-14).
“I am the gate. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved and will come in and go out and find pasture,” (John 10:9 CSB).
The Day of His Restoration will come for the remnant, according to His gracious choice.
In the same way then, there has also come to be at the present time a remnant according to God’s gracious choice, (Romans 11:5).
And on the Day of His Restoration, He will gather the remnant of His flock under our Righteous Shepherd King to live securely for all of eternity.
“Then I Myself will gather the remnant of My flock out of all the countries where I have driven them, and bring them back to their pasture, and they will be fruitful and multiply. 4 I will also raise up shepherds over them and they will tend them; and they will not be afraid any longer, nor be terrified, nor will any be missing,” declares the Lord.
5 “Behold, the days are coming,” declares the Lord,
“When I will raise up for David a righteous Branch;
And He will reign as king and act wisely
And do justice and righteousness in the land.
6 In His days Judah will be saved,
And Israel will live securely;
And this is His name by which He will be called,
‘The Lord Our Righteousness.’ (Jeremiah 23:3-6).
How can anyone reject His forgiveness and mercy that casts our sins into the depths of the sea?
Who is a God like You, who pardons wrongdoing
And passes over a rebellious act of the remnant of His possession?
He does not retain His anger forever,
Because He delights in mercy.
19 He will again take pity on us;
He will trample on our wrongdoings.
Yes, You will cast all their sins
Into the depths of the sea, (Micah 7:18-19).
In light of the Day of His Restoration being Reserved for His Remnant, we must ask ourselves: have I called on the Name of Jesus and trusted Him for salvation from my sins so that I know there is a place in His Kingdom that has been Reserved for me?
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable, undefiled, and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, 5 who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time, (1 Peter 1:3-5).
Don’t let another day pass without knowing that His imperishable inheritance is Reserved in heaven for you. God has told us that it is those who call on the Name of the Lord who will survive that day.
And it will come about that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord
Will be saved;
For on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem
There will be those who escape,
Just as the Lord has said,
Even among the survivors whom the Lord calls, (Joel 2:32).
And the really unbelievably great news is that whoever calls on the Name of the Lord Jesus will be saved!
for “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved,” (Romans 10:13).
If you have yet to do so, today can be the day when you call on the Name of the Lord Jesus for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will be saved. It is only through faith in Jesus that you can be Restored to a loving relationship with Holy God. And it is only through Jesus, that each one of us are enabled to look ahead in confidence to that day, the Day of His Restoration for His remnant.
By this, love is perfected with us, so that we may have confidence in the day of judgment; because as He is, so also are we in this world, (1 John 4:17).
