Revelation 18 … Consider His Swift and Strong Judgment

“For this reason in one day her plagues will come, pestilence and mourning and famine, and she will be burned up with fire; for the Lord God who judges her is strong,” (18:8).

In one day. As the saying goes, life can turn on a dime. And in one day, in one hour, everything changes for Babylon the great.

And he cried out with a mighty voice, saying, “Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great! …” (18:2).

Scholars debate as to the actual identity of Babylon the great. Some believe Babylon the great refers to the actual ancient kingdom which will again be reestablished in opulence and power; some argue that Babylon the great figuratively represents all evil nations; and some maintain that Babylon the great represents the evil world system at large controlled by the antichrist.

Whatever point of view, there are common denominators held by all viewpoints regarding Babylon the great: Her influence is far-reaching across all people groups; she is steeped in idolatry and blasphemy; she will beguile many with the lure of wealth, luxury and commercial trade; she will persecute and murder God’s people; the alliance of ten kings that wage war with Holy God in the end times will come forth from her; and she will fall, and her fall will be great.

And to the same degree that she glorified herself, to the same degree that her influence corrupted the masses will be the degree of her great fall when she faces His Swift and Strong Judgment.

“To the degree that she glorified herself and lived sensuously, to the same degree give her torment and mourning; for she says in her heart, ‘I sit as a queen and I am not a widow, and will never see mourning,’” (18:4-5).

And four times His Swift and Strong Judgment is described. And in one day, in one hour, like the flip of the switch, plagues and judgment will come, and wealth and security will be laid waste by His Swift and Strong Judgment.

Consider His Swift and Strong Judgment

His sentence has been decreed, to be carried out in His time. And while Babylon the great is reveling in her own wicked strength, her sins are piling up before Holy God.

I heard another voice from heaven, saying, “Come out of her, my people, so that you will not participate in her sins and receive of her plagues; for her sins have piled up as high as heaven, and God has remembered her iniquities,” (18:4-5).

And in one day, in one hour, His sentence will be carried out by His Swift and Strong Judgment.

“‘For this reason in one day her plagues will come,
For in one hour your judgment has come,’” (18:8).

In one hour, torment will come by His Swift and Strong Judgment.

“And the kings of the earth, who committed acts of immorality and lived sensuously with her, will weep and lament over her when they see the smoke of her burning, 10 standing at a distance because of the fear of her torment, saying, ‘Woe, woe, the great city, Babylon, the strong city! For in one hour your judgment has come.’” (18:9-10).

In one hour, great wealth will be laid waste by His Swift and Strong Judgment.

“saying, ‘Woe, woe, the great city, she who was clothed in fine linen and purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls; 17 for in one hour such great wealth has been laid waste!’ And every shipmaster and every passenger and sailor, and as many as make their living by the sea, stood at a distance, 18 and were crying out as they saw the smoke of her burning, saying, ‘What city is like the great city?’” (18:16-18).

In one hour, every false hope will be annihilated by His Swift and Strong Judgment.

“And they threw dust on their heads and were crying out, weeping and mourning, saying, ‘Woe, woe, the great city, in which all who had ships at sea became rich by her wealth, for in one hour she has been laid waste!’” (18:19).

For in one day, His Swift and Strong Judgment will make its appearance, and in one hour, every false god will be found out and shattered to the ground.

“Now behold, here comes a troop of riders, horsemen in pairs.”
And one said, “Fallen, fallen is Babylon;
And all the images of her gods are shattered on the ground,”
(Isaiah 21:9).

How do we respond to His Swift and Strong Judgment?

The day is coming when every evil kingdom, evil nation, and the entire evil world system controlled by the antichrist will be Swiftly and Strongly Judged and be no more. But the truth is, until Jesus comes again, though we belong to Him, we will live in a world that is under the control of the evil one.

We know that we are of God, and that the whole world lies in the power of the evil one, (1 John 5:19).

And while we do live in this world, we are not to live under the enemy’s power. Jesus has called us to come out of the world that we would not participate in darkness and so escape the consequences of His Swift and Strong Judgment.

I heard another voice from heaven, saying, “Come out of her, my people, so that you will not participate in her sins and receive of her plagues; for her sins have piled up as high as heaven, and God has remembered her iniquities,” (18:4-5).

The enemy’s tactics are ever the same, deception and lies. Oh, may be wise that we would never fall into the schemes of the evil one so as to be lulled into counting God’s patience to mean He has relented from His Swift Judgment, or into believing that His Strong Judgment is somehow weakened by His delay.

But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day. The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance, (2 Peter 3:8-9).

For what may seem like thousands of years to us is but one day to our Eternal God. He is not slow or weak in His Judgment; He is patient and continues to invite whoever will believe in Him to come to Him in faith, and to come out of the world and escape His wrath.

His Judgment will come according to His time and His power, and His Judgment will be Swift and Strong as prophesied about Babylon the great. But for believers in Christ, in one moment, life will turn on a dime.

In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet; for the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed, (1 Corinthians 15:52).

Until He comes again, may we truly treasure His Word that will keep us from the evil one, and enable us to live in this world as set apart unto our Savior, that we would follow in obedience as He sends us into a world that is in danger of receiving His Swift and Strong Judgment.

“I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. 15 I do not ask You to take them out of the world, but to keep them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. 17 Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth. 18 As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world,” (John 17:14-18).

Oh, let us seek Him in His Word daily, that He would sanctify us as His ambassadors to go into all the world to share the hope we have in Christ Who has reconciled us to Holy God. Oh, may we humbly walk in the ministry we have received, that we would go where He sends us to boldly share the message of reconciliation we have through Christ, that others would also be spared from His Swift and Strong Judgment.

Now all these things are from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation, 19 namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and He has committed to us the word of reconciliation. 20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making an appeal  through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God, (2 Corinthians 5:18-20).
