Genesis 14 … Consider Him, God Most High, Possessor of Heaven and Earth

“Blessed be Abram of God Most High,

This description of God is repeated twice in this chapter, “God Most High, Possessor of Heaven and Earth,” (14:19, 22). And remember, when God repeats Himself, we are to pay attention!

So today let us consider Him, as He twice described Himself.

Consider Him, God Most High, Possessor of Heaven and Earth

He is God. He alone is Supreme, Creator, Ruler, Majesty.

He is High. His position is far above our standing, beyond our grasp. He is set apart, Holy.

He is “Most” High. Most is a superlative, “noting the highest degree of comparison; supreme; the utmost.” He alone is Most High. None can surpass for He surpasses all. None can possibly compare.

He is Possessor of Heaven and Earth. Some translations read “Creator.” God Most High alone created and possesses all of heaven and earth. He alone has authority over His creation.

How should we respond to the LORD God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth?

Praise His Holy and Majestic Name. He alone is God in all heaven and earth. “O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth,” (Psalm 8:1).

Acknowledge His position as Most High, Holy and Set Apart. King David asked the question, “Who may ascend the hill of the LORD? And who may stand in His holy place?”  (Psalm 24:3). This query spotlights how high and very far removed the LORD is from all creation. The following verse answers the question posed, “He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who has not lifted up his soul to falsehood and sworn deceitfully,” (Psalm 24:4). How disheartening. No one qualifies to stand in His holy place!

Agree with Him about our condition. We are not fit to enter His presence for He is Most High, Perfect and Holy. Scripture indicts our own efforts to earn our way into His presence. “…all our righteous acts are like filthy rags,” (Isaiah 64:6 NIV).

Accept His Only Provision. In His lavish grace He provided the way. Only because of the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross can we take our stand before Him. “He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him,” (2 Corinthians 5:21).

Commit our lives to faith. Believe His Word and receive His unmerited gift of salvation and forgiveness. Then live by faith, as one who is forgiven and loved! “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me,” (Galatians 2:20).

Live our lives in worship and submission to His authority. It is the very least we can do in response to our God Most High, Possessor of Heaven and Earth. “Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship,” (Romans 12:1).
