And Solomon sat on the throne of David his father, and his kingdom was firmly established… (2:12).
“Now therefore, as the Lord lives, who has established me and set me on the throne of David my father and who has made me a house as He promised… 45 … King Solomon shall be blessed, and the throne of David shall be established before the Lord forever,” 46 …Thus the kingdom was established in the hands of Solomon, (2:24, 45-46).
The word, establish, is translated from the Hebrew as “A verb meaning to set up, to make firm, to establish, to prepare. The primary action of this verb is to cause to stand in an upright position, and thus the word also means fixed or steadfast,” (From: Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance).
God would establish the Throne of His Kingdom through the royal line of David. His Kingdom, upright, fixed and steadfast, established by Him and for Him.
Consider His Established Throne
- His Throne, Established in His Ways:
- “Keep the charge of the Lord your God, to walk in His ways, to keep His statutes, His commandments, His ordinances, and His testimonies, according to what is written in the Law of Moses, that you may succeed in all that you do and wherever you turn,” (2:3).
- His Throne, Established in His Justice:
- “Now you also know what Joab the son of Zeruiah did to me, what he did to the two commanders of the armies of Israel, to Abner the son of Ner, and to Amasa the son of Jether, whom he killed; he also shed the blood of war in peace… 7 But show kindness to the sons of Barzillai the Gileadite, and let them be among those who eat at your table; for they assisted me when I fled from Absalom your brother,” (2:5,7).
- His Throne, Established in His Wisdom:
- “So act according to your wisdom…” (2:6).
- His Throne, Established Through the Line of David (His Throne would be established forever through the line of David. The promised Messiah King would be a descendant of the line of David):
- “…so that the Lord may carry out His promise which He spoke concerning me, saying, ‘If your sons are careful of their way, to walk before Me in truth with all their heart and with all their soul, you shall not lack a man on the throne of Israel,’” (2:4).
- A quick perusal of the descendants of David reveals sons who were not careful of their ways… until One was born:
For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us;
And the government will rest on His shoulders;
And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.
7 There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace,
On the throne of David and over his kingdom,
To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness
From then on and forevermore.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will accomplish this, (Isaiah 9:6-7)
- A quick perusal of the descendants of David reveals sons who were not careful of their ways… until One was born:
- And His Name is Jesus, the Messiah and King on His Established Throne.
- The record of the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah, the son of David, the son of Abraham, (Matthew 1:1).
- Christ… 22 who committed no sin, nor was any deceit found in His mouth; (1 Peter 2:21-22).
- “…so that the Lord may carry out His promise which He spoke concerning me, saying, ‘If your sons are careful of their way, to walk before Me in truth with all their heart and with all their soul, you shall not lack a man on the throne of Israel,’” (2:4).
- His Throne, Established Forever:
- “But King Solomon shall be blessed, and the throne of David shall be established before the Lord forever,” (2:45).
How do we respond to His Established Throne?
While man does not shake or change the history of His Established Throne, our personal choices bring ramifications within our own lives.
- Established in His Ways: Let us in faith depend on His Holy Spirit, Who empowers us to set our hearts to walk in His ways.
- How blessed is everyone who fears the Lord,
Who walks in His ways, (Psalm 128:1).
- How blessed is everyone who fears the Lord,
- Established in His Justice: We live in times when justice seems to fluctuate with the times. But only One is Just. May we humbly yield to Him, entrusting ourselves to His Justice.
- I said to myself, “God will judge both the righteous man and the wicked man,” for a time for every matter and for every deed is there, (Ecclesiastes 3:17).
- Established in His Wisdom: As we will read tomorrow, Solomon was left overwhelmed with his appointment to the throne.
- “Now, O Lord my God, You have made Your servant king in place of my father David, yet I am but a little child; I do not know how to go out or come in. 8 Your servant is in the midst of Your people which You have chosen, a great people who are too many to be numbered or counted. 9 So give Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people to discern between good and evil. For who is able to judge this great people of Yours?” (1 Kings 3:7-9).
- Oh that we would have hearts that quickly turn to Him in faith, to wholeheartedly seek His wisdom that we might become His obedient servants.
- But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him. 6 But he must ask in faith without any doubting,… (James 1:5-6).
- Established Through the Line of David: May we always remember Jesus is King. May we never take for granted His grace in His gift of salvation. Let us pray we would live lives worthy of being a child of our Great and Heavenly King.
- …so that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; 11 strengthened with all power, according to His glorious might, for the attaining of all steadfastness and patience; joyously 12 giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified us to share in the inheritance of the saints in Light, (Colossians 1:10-12).
- Established Forever: This world is not our forever home. Let us live each day mindful of our eternity. We are destined for a Heavenly Home where we will enjoy the glory of His Established Throne forever and ever.
- Then the seventh angel sounded; and there were loud voices in heaven, saying, “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ; and He will reign forever and ever,” (Revelation 11:15).
What a glorious privilege to know Him Who Will Reign Forever! Oh that we would live each day in gratitude, humility and praise, ever mindful of His Established Throne.
