Psalm 28 and 29 … Consider His Glorious Voice

The voice of the Lord makes the deer to calve
And strips the forests bare;
And in His temple everything says, “Glory!” (29:9).

When God speaks, the miraculous happens. There is light. A universe comes into existence. The heavens are formed. The earth is inhabited. Kingdoms are established. Nations are toppled. The dead are raised to life.

All power, all might, all authority, all strength is in His Glorious Voice and David knew it. David knew, if only God would not be silent, if only He would speak and send forth His Glorious Voice, David would be rescued from going down to the pit.

To You, O Lord, I call;
My rock, do not be deaf to me,
For if You are silent to me,
I will become like those who go down to the pit. (28:1).

And in Psalm 29, King, David calls his subjects to acknowledge, in tribute and worship, the glory due His Name

Ascribe to the Lord, O sons of the mighty,
Ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
² Ascribe to the Lord the glory due to His name;
Worship the Lord in holy array, (29:1-2).

David describes Him as King, sitting on His throne, powerful, majestic and sovereign. He doesn’t move from His throne; He has only to release His Glorious Voice. And as though to emphasize His power, He reminds them of His authority and control over catastrophic events, over judgment, over all of eternity, and of the promise of His blessing and peace for all who belong to Him.

The Lord sat as King at the flood;
Yes, the Lord sits as King forever.
¹¹ The Lord will give strength to His people;
The Lord will bless His people with peace, (29:10-11).

And as David recounted the awesome deeds of the Eternal King, he draws everyone’s attention to His Glorious Voice as the strength and might of His supernatural means. He powerfully and majestically commands thunder and storms; His Glorious Voice shatters massive cedar trees; causes mountains to move; sends the lightning; shakes the wilderness; makes the deer give birth; and twists and strips forests bare (29:3-9).

There is not one part of His creation that does not respond, not one part that does not ascribe to Him the glory due His Name; all of His creation raises their voice to give honor and praise to His Glorious Voice.

…And in His temple everything says, “Glory!” (29:9).

Of course they do! He is the King, on His throne, directing nature’s course and granting strength and peace to His people by His Glorious Voice

Consider His Glorious Voice

His Glorious Voice; it may not always sound the same, but His message is unchanging, and it will always be Glorious.

• His Glorious Voice, powerful and majestic:
  • The voice of the Lord is powerful,
    The voice of the Lord is majestic, (29:4).

• His Glorious Voice, still and small:
  • …but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; ¹² and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice, (1 Kings 19:11-12 NKJV).

• His Glorious Voice, accomplishing His desire:
  • “So will My word be which goes forth from My mouth;
    It will not return to Me empty,
    Without accomplishing what I desire,
    And without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it,” (Isaiah 55:11).

• His Glorious Voice, guiding our way:
  • “Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it,” (Isaiah 30:21).

• His Glorious Voice, calling into existence that which is not:
  • …God, who gives life to the dead and calls into being that which does not exist, (Romans 4:17).

• His Glorious Voice, spoken in His Son:
  • God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, ² in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world, (Hebrews 1:1-2).

• His Glorious Voice, directing us to His Son:
  • While he was still speaking, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and behold, a voice out of the cloud said, “This is My beloved Son, with whom I am well-pleased; listen to Him!” (Matthew 17:5).

• His Glorious Voice, calling the dead to life:
  • “Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live,” (John 5:25).

• His Glorious Voice, giving eternal life:
  • “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; ²⁸ and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand,” (John 10:27-28).

• His Glorious Voice, inspiring His Scripture for our spiritual welfare:
  • All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness, (2 Timothy 3:16).

How do we respond to His Glorious voice?

While His Glorious Voice is profoundly heard through His works in nature, His still small Voice that guides and directs, the Voice of His Son and the Voice of His Scriptures are to be received by faith. That’s the place we must begin.

So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ, (Romans 10:17).

And when we have come into relationship with Him through faith, He positions us to both petition Him and hear His Glorious Voice.

• When we are in a time of need, let us earnestly and honestly call on Him in faith, that we may hear His Glorious Voice
  • To You, O Lord, I call;
    My rock, do not be deaf to me,
    For if You are silent to me,
    I will become like those who go down to the pit. (28:1).

• Let us believe, with full assurance, that He has heard, and He will answer. David sang His praises before his deliverance came, and that encouraged his heart. Let us also trust Him to send forth His Glorious Voice for our rescue and sing our thanks to Him while we wait.
  • Blessed be the Lord,
    Because He has heard the voice of my supplication.
    ⁷ The Lord is my strength and my shield;
    My heart trusts in Him, and I am helped;
    Therefore my heart exults,
    And with my song I shall thank Him, (28:6-7).

• Every day is a new opportunity to hear from our amazing God. Let us be moved by His Glorious Voice to give Him glory as we bow in humble worship before Him.
  • Ascribe to the Lord, O sons of the mighty,
    Ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
    ² Ascribe to the Lord the glory due to His name;
    Worship the Lord in holy array, (29:1-2).

• And because we know He hears, let us intercede for others, that they too might Hear His Glorious Voice; that the Lord would save them, bless them and carry them forever.
  • The Lord is their strength,
    And He is a saving defense to His anointed.
    ⁹ Save Your people and bless Your inheritance;
    Be their shepherd also, and carry them forever, (29:8-9).

Let us never get over it!  He is on His throne and we have been granted an audience with the King of the universe! As we come before Him in awe and humility, let us come in faith and expectation, confident we will Hear His Glorious Voice granting us His strength, His blessing and His peace.
