Psalm 82 and 83 … Consider Him, Most High Over All the Earth

That they may know that You alone, whose name is the Lord,
Are the Most High over all the earth, (83:18).

Living in the place of need. 2020 has seemingly made this place our permanent residence. And while we surely long for an end to the turmoil ushered in by this crazy year, the truth is, we have no idea what tomorrow will bring, let alone next year.

Things that used to be so normal and safe, going to school, the grocery store and church, are now deemed dangerous. Suspicion and mistrust are more prevalent than confidence and trust. And when listening to the “experts,” we will hear of our world overrun by a pandemic, and teetering on the edge of absolute pandemonium.

Pandemonium: “wild uproar or unrestrained disorder; tumult or chaos; a place or scene of riotous uproar or utter chaos; (often initial capital letter) the abode of all the demons; hell.”

Today, I was reminded that when we live in the place of need, we have a choice to make. We can choose to live in our personal state of perpetual pandemonium, listening to the enemy of our souls, being filled with angst and utter chaos within, and end up making our abode in our own personal hell. Or, we can choose to live in His place of perpetual peace, as we place our faith in Him.

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen, (Hebrews 11:1).

I needed to be reminded today, perhaps you do as well: no matter the chaos, the uncertainty and disarray we may currently find ourselves in, God is on the throne and He is Most High Over All the Earth.

Consider Him, Most High Over All the Earth

• He will judge those who govern unjustly and show partiality to the wicked; He is Most High Over All the Earth.
  • God takes His stand in His own congregation;
    He judges in the midst of the rulers.
    ² How long will you judge unjustly
    And show partiality to the wicked? Selah, (82:1-2).

• He will vindicate, rescue and deliver the weak, the fatherless, the destitute and needy; He is Most High Over All the Earth.
  • Vindicate the weak and fatherless;
    Do justice to the afflicted and destitute,
    ⁴ Rescue the weak and needy;
    Deliver them out of the hand of the wicked, (82:3-4).

• He possesses every nation, and all must answer to Him; He is Most High Over All the Earth.
  • Arise, O God, judge the earth!
    For it is You who possesses all the nations, (82:8).

• No matter the puffed-up schemes and conspiracies of the enemy; He is Most High Over All the Earth.
  • For behold, Your enemies make an uproar,
    And those who hate You have exalted themselves.
    ³ They make shrewd plans against Your people,
    And conspire together against Your treasured ones, (83:2-3).

• He chastises His enemies that they would turn to seek His Name; He is Most High Over All the Earth.
  •  Fill their faces with dishonor,
    That they may seek Your name, O Lord, (83:16).

• His judgment will reveal His Truth; He alone is Lord and Most High Over All the Earth
  • Let them be ashamed and dismayed forever,
    And let them be humiliated and perish,
    ¹⁸ That they may know that You alone, whose name is the Lord,
    Are the Most High over all the earth, (83:17-18).

How do we respond to Him, Most High Over All the Earth?

We must respond in faith. If pandemonium is running wild within our souls, faith will soothe the inner mayhem. Like the psalmist, we too can ask the Lord to not be silent and to quiet the pandemonium within.

O God, do not remain quiet;
Do not be silent and, O God, do not be still, (83:1).

The truth is, the Lord is not silent; He is ever speaking. As we considered yesterday in Psalm 81, we must be ever listening. We must listen to His voice of truth rather than the riotous screams of the enemy.

Today, may His Truth in Jesus Christ our Savior, bring His perpetual peace, for He is Most High Over All the Earth.

“He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David; ³³ and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom will have no end,” (Luke 1:32-33).

The best way to turn off the noise and pandemonious voices within, is to lift up our eyes and fix our hearts and minds on Jesus Christ, Most High Over All the Earth.

Therefore if you have been raised up with Christ, step seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God, (Colossians 3:1).

fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God, (Hebrews 12:2).

There’s a reason Scripture repeatedly encourages us to look up and lift up our eyes, for He is Most High Over All the Earth. He is Most High Over All in His holiness, His sovereign power, and His faithfulness.

So, today, let’s just skip past 2020, past the pandemic, past the current chaos, to the end of the story. We can leave pandemonium behind as we look up and consider Him, Most High Over All the Earth as revealed in the end of His story in His great Book of Revelation.

• Let us look up and live as overcomers, knowing in the end we will sit down on His throne with Him, Most High Over All the Earth.
  • “He who overcomes, I will grant to him to sit down with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne,” (Revelation 3:21).

• Let us live lives worthy of His Name, practicing what we will be doing for all of eternity; let us live to worship Him, Most High Over All the Earth.
  • the twenty-four elders will fall down before Him who sits on the throne, and will worship Him who lives forever and ever, and will cast their crowns before the throne, saying, ¹¹ “Worthy are You, our Lord and our God, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and because of Your will they existed, and were created,” (Revelation 4:10-11).

• Let us trust that every created thing is now, and forever, under His dominion, that we would live to bless, honor and glorify Him, Most High Over All the Earth.
  • And every created thing which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all things in them, I heard saying, “To Him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb, be blessing and honor and glory and dominion forever and ever,” (Revelation 5:13).

• Oh, may our faith be strengthened to the very end as we know the day of suffering will cease when we finally come into the presence of Him, Most High Over All the Earth.
  • “They will hunger no longer, nor thirst anymore; nor will the sun beat down on them, nor any heat; ¹⁷ for the Lamb in the center of the throne will be their shepherd, and will guide them to springs of the water of life; and God will wipe every tear from their eyes,”  (Revelation 7:16-17).

• Let us make ourselves ready in His righteousness for the day we are presented as the bride of Him, Most High Over All the Earth.
  • Then I heard something like the voice of a great multitude and like the sound of many waters and like the sound of mighty peals of thunder, saying, “Hallelujah! For the Lord our God, the Almighty, reigns. ⁷ Let us rejoice and be glad and give the glory to Him, for the marriage of the Lamb has come and His bride has made herself ready.” ⁸ It was given to her to clothe herself in fine linen, bright and clean; for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints, (Revelation19:6-8).

• Oh that we would live in faith, knowing the day is coming when the enemy will be crushed, when torment and turmoil will cease, pandemics and pandemonium will be vanquished, and we will live in the perpetual peace of Him, Most High Over All the Earth.
  • And the devil who deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are also; and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever. ¹¹ Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat upon it, from whose presence earth and heaven fled away, and no place was found for them, (Revelation 20:10-11).

Let us wait on Him in His perpetual peace, for in the end of His story all things will be made new. Let us wait in faith, for He is faithful and true from the beginning to the end, when we will live as His beloved children and forever dwell with Him, Most High Over All the Earth.

And He who sits on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” And He said, “Write, for these words are faithful and true.” ⁶ Then He said to me, “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give to the one who thirsts from the spring of the water of life without cost. ⁷ He who overcomes will inherit these things, and I will be his God and he will be My son, (Revelation 21:5).
