Psalm 105 … Consider His Everlasting Covenant

He has remembered His covenant forever,
The word which He commanded to a thousand generations,
⁹ The covenant which He made with Abraham,
And His oath to Isaac.
¹⁰ Then He confirmed it to Jacob for a statute,
To Israel as an everlasting covenant, (105:8-10).

Psalm 105 is a biographical thumbnail sketch of God’s chosen people. As I read the miraculous history of the nation of Israel, I wondered how often they must have thought that none of this made sense.

• Abraham… promised a child that would fulfill God’s prophecy to make him a great nation of blessing; but still waiting at the age of 99.
• Abraham… finally received his promised child; but was commanded to put the promise to death.
• Isaac… who loved Esau and desired him to receive the blessing; but Jacob was chosen.
• Joseph… who had been given visions of his rise to prominence; but finds himself sold as a slave and imprisoned.
• Jacob’s family… carries the line of God’s promise; but faces extinction from a worldwide famine.
• God’s children… called to become His great nation; but held in bondage for 400 years.
• Moses… called to be the deliverer; but spends 40 years in the wilderness.
• God’s people… set free from Pharaoh; but find themselves trapped at the Red Sea.

Yea, sometimes things in the present just don’t make sense… until they’re in the past.

Because behind every brush with bewilderment, every incident of inconvenience, every moment of misfortune, every occasion of oppression, every point of puzzlement, every season of suffering, behind every bit of every battle is His Everlasting Covenant making sense of the present, and bringing both the past and the present into harmony with His future.

Consider His Everlasting Covenant

• His Covenant is Everlasting as He has decreed it.
  • He is the Lord our God;
    His judgments are in all the earth, (105:7).

• His Covenant is Everlasting as He has commanded it.
  • He has remembered His covenant forever,
    The word which He commanded to a thousand generations, (105:8).

• His Covenant is Everlasting as He has confirmed it.
  • The covenant which He made with Abraham,
    And His oath to Isaac.
    ¹⁰ Then He confirmed it to Jacob for a statute,
    To Israel as an everlasting covenant, (105:9-10).

How do we respond to His Everlasting Covenant?

He has decreed it, commanded it and confirmed it. All we must do is believe it and place our faith in His Everlasting Covenant.

When life doesn’t make sense, let us review our miraculous history in His Everlasting Covenant.

When we place our faith in Christ, our past has been judged on the cross; He has decreed it to be so.

When you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions, ¹⁴ having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross, (Colossians 2:13-14).

When we are made alive in Christ, we can trust Him to accomplish His purpose in our present; He has commanded it to be so.

And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. ²⁹ For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren; ³⁰ and these whom He predestined, He also called; and these whom He called, He also justified; and these whom He justified, He also glorified, (Romans 8:28-30).

When we love God and live for His purpose, we can look forward to our eternal inheritance in Him; He has confirmed it to be so.

also we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to His purpose who works all things after the counsel of His will, ¹² to the end that we who were the first to hope in Christ would be to the praise of His glory. ¹³ In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, ¹⁴ who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God’s own possession, to the praise of His glory, (Ephesians 1:11-14).

As we review our miraculous history, our past, our present and our future will be brought into harmony, that we will live ever mindful and obedient of all He has decreed, commanded and confirmed by His Everlasting Covenant.

• Let us give thanks to Him in faith for His Everlasting Covenant.
  • Oh give thanks to the Lord, call upon His name; (105:1a).

• Let us always be ready to tell others of His Everlasting Covenant.
  • Make known His deeds among the peoples, (105:1b).

• Let us sing, praise and speak of the wonders of His Everlasting Covenant.
  • Sing to Him, sing praises to Him;
    Speak of all His wonders, (105:2).

• Let us gladly give Him all the glory for His Everlasting Covenant.
  • Glory in His holy name;
    Let the heart of those who seek the Lord be glad, (105:3).

• Let us seek Him continually that we would be strengthened in His Everlasting Covenant.
  • Seek the Lord and His strength;
    Seek His face continually, (105:4).

• Let us daily review our miraculous history, that we would always remember and never get over His marvelous Everlasting Covenant.
  • Remember His wonders which He has done,
    His marvels and the judgments uttered by His mouth, (105:5).
