Isaiah 62 … Consider Him Who Calls Us by a New Name

The nations will see your righteousness,
And all kings your glory;
And you will be called by a new name
Which the mouth of the Lord will designate, (62:2).

The transformation story continues, and it will not be silenced. While there is debate as to whether this chapter records Isaiah speaking on behalf of the Lord, or God Himself advancing His message, what is abundantly clear is that the declaration of what is coming will not be restrained.

For Zion’s sake I will not keep silent,
And for Jerusalem’s sake I will not keep quiet,
Until her righteousness goes forth like brightness,
And her salvation like a torch that is burning, (62:1).

And the curtain is pulled back to unveil what is coming for all those who look to Him in faith. And on that day, there will be no denying what He has done in those who have been saved by faith; for all will see His Light and His Righteousness in His people who now shine like jewels in the hand of God.

You will also be a crown of beauty in the hand of the Lord,
And a royal diadem in the hand of your God, (62:3).

And the transformation is so completely comprehensive, that a New Name must be designated, for what once was cannot possibly depict what now is; and what once was, is meant to be let go.

“Do not call to mind the former things,
Or ponder things of the past.
¹⁹ “Behold, I will do something new,
Now it will spring forth…” (Isaiah 43:18-19).

Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come, (2 Corinthians 5:17).

And as the old things pass away, the new things come; and He Calls Us By a New Name.

Consider Him Who Calls Us by a New Name

It will no longer be said to you, “Forsaken,”
Nor to your land will it any longer be said, “Desolate”;
But you will be called, “My delight is in her,”
And your land, “Married”;
For the Lord delights in you,
And to Him your land will be married…
¹¹ Behold, the Lord has proclaimed to the end of the earth,
Say to the daughter of Zion, “Lo, your salvation comes;
Behold His reward is with Him, and His recompense before Him.”
¹² And they will call them, “The holy people,
The redeemed of the Lord”;
And you will be called, “Sought out, a city not forsaken.” (62:4, 11-12 emphases added).

Five New Names are given by the Lord to express His New Work. And while this passage prophetically looks forward to the day when Christ will come again as the Glorious King of all the earth, it also looks back to what Christ accomplished on the cross as the Suffering Servant.

Five New Names given to all those who belong to Him through faith, and each one, so intimate and precious. And although the Names He Calls Us by are New, they have been His will since the beginning, fulfilled in the Son He Gave.

• He Calls Us by a New Name, “My delight is in her,” disclosing His Love and Desire.
  • The Lord appeared to him from afar, saying,
    “I have loved you with an everlasting love;
    Therefore I have drawn you with lovingkindness, (Jeremiah 31:3).

• • • “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life,” (John 3:16).

• He Calls Us by a New Name, “Married, ” proclaiming His Commitment and Faithfulness.
  • “For your husband is your Maker,
    Whose name is the Lord of hosts;
    And your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel,
    Who is called the God of all the earth,” (Isaiah 54:5).

• • • For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, ³⁹ nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord, (Romans 8:38-39).

• He Calls Us by a New Name, “Holy people,” expressing His Sanctifying Work that Sets Us Apart.
  • “Thus you are to be holy to Me, for I the Lord am holy; and I have set you apart from the peoples to be Mine,” (Leviticus 20:26).

• • • knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin, (Romans 6:6).

• He Calls Us by a New Name, “Redeemed of the Lord,” recounting His Redemption and Restoration.
  • But now, thus says the Lord, your Creator, O Jacob,
    And He who formed you, O Israel,
    “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;
    I have called you by name; you are Mine!” (Isaiah 43:1).

• • • In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace, (Ephesians 1:7).

• He Calls Us by a New Name, “Sought out, a city not forsaken,” portraying His Seeking and Saving.
  • For thus says the Lord God, “Behold, I Myself will search for My sheep and seek them out,” (Ezekiel 34:11).

• • • “For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost,” (Luke 19:10).

How do we respond to Him Who Calls Us by a New Name?

I had to ask myself a question. Perhaps you felt the need to do the same. “Am I living up to my New Name?” But we know, that in and of ourselves, we will never be able to achieve such a lofty standard. So, what then are we to do?

As we consider each New Name He Calls Us, He invites us to turn our eyes off self, that we would see Him. And as He Calls Us by a New Name, we will hear His Call to become like Him.

that, in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, ²³ and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind, ²⁴ and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth, (Ephesians 4:22-24).

• Let us live up to our New Name, that we would delight ourselves through our unfettered faith and obedience in the One Who declares, “My delight is in her.”
  • Delight yourself in the Lord;
    And He will give you the desires of your heart.
    ⁵ Commit your way to the Lord,
    Trust also in Him, and He will do it.
    ⁶ He will bring forth your righteousness as the light
    And your judgment as the noonday, (Psalm 37:4-6).

• Let us live up to our New Name, that we would live as the “Married” and faithful bride of our Faithful Bridegroom.
  • “Let us rejoice and be glad and give the glory to Him, for the marriage of the Lamb has come and His bride has made herself ready.” ⁸ It was given to her to clothe herself in fine linen, bright and clean; for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints, (Revelation 19:7-8).

• Let us live up to our New Name, “The holy people,” that we would daily depend on the Sanctifying Work of His Holy Spirit and His Holy Word to Set Us Apart in His Truth.
  • “But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come,” (John 16:13).
  • “Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth,” (John 17:17).

• Let us live up to our New Name, “The redeemed of the Lord,” with overflowing thanksgiving as we tell others of His Goodness bestowed in His Redemption and Restoration.
  • Oh give thanks to the Lord, for He is good,
    For His lovingkindness is everlasting.
    ² Let the redeemed of the Lord say so,
    Whom He has redeemed from the hand of the adversary, (Psalm 107:2).

• And let us live up to our New Name, “Sought out, a city not forsaken,” that we would seek out others and faithfully proclaim His invitation to come out of darkness and be gathered to His Marvelous Light through faith in Jesus Christ; and that through our testimony, others would also become His people who know the Excellencies of the Marvelous Grace, Mercy, and Salvation of Him Who Calls Us by a New Name.
  • But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; ¹⁰ for you once were not a people, but now you are the people of God; you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy, (1 Peter 2:9).
