Jeremiah 33 … Consider Him Who Tells Us Great and Mighty Things We Do Not Know

“Call to Me and I will answer you, and I will tell you great and mighty things, which you do not know,” (33:3).

Jeremiah is still locked up, confined in the court of the guard.

Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah the second time, while he was still confined in the court of the guard, saying…(33:1).

And while this Hebrew word translated confined means to “restrain, shut in, keep in slavery, keep from, prevent” (Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance), all the prisons and prison guards in the world cannot restrain, shut in, keep in slavery, keep from, or prevent His Word from coming.

Oh, how gracious and faithful is our God, the Creator of all the universe, Who comes to Jeremiah in this place that seems so hopeless; perhaps to a place Jeremiah had never imagined he would find himself.

And in this very place God reminds Jeremiah of His Name, Yahweh, the God Who Keeps His Covenant; and it is in this place of confinement that He speaks of His Great and Mighty Things, promising hope that perhaps even Jeremiah could not have possibly imagined.

“Thus says the Lord who made the earth, the Lord who formed it to establish it, the Lord is His name, ³ ‘Call Call to Me and I will answer you, and I will tell you great and mighty things, which you do not know,’” (33:2-3).

For while the city is in the throes of being demolished, out of the rubble rises His Word as He Tells of His Great and Mighty Things that Jeremiah, and the people of Israel, Do Not Know.

Consider Him Who Tells Us Great and Mighty Things We Do Not Know

Who could have ever imagined, who could have ever thought of all His Great and Mighty Things He had planned. It was an unsearchable mystery, as of yet to be Known, but would be revealed in Jesus Christ.

that is, the mystery which has been hidden from the past ages and generations, but has now been manifested to His saints, ²⁷ to whom God willed to make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory, (Colossians 1:26-27).

He Tells Us Great and Mighty Things We Do Not Know, things we can never know apart from faith in Christ and the indwelling Holy Spirit of God.

Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may know the things freely given to us by God… ¹⁶ For who has known the mind of the Lord, that he will instruct Him? But we have the mind of Christ, (1 Corinthians 2:12, 16).

Do you not know that you are a temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? (1 Corinthians 3:16).

I love days like today. Days when the Old and the New meet so perfectly in Jesus Christ. Today’s chapter is so full, so uplifting, so encouraging, and so prophetic. And while there have been many hard days in this book, today is definitely not one of them.

As we consider all that He Tells Jeremiah, we will be granted the glorious privilege to clearly see the Promised Messiah unveiled in Jesus Christ, in His Great and Mighty Things in the past, present, and yet to come.

• He Tells Us of His Great and Mighty Health and Healing.
  • “Behold, I will bring to it health and healing, and I will heal them…” (33:6).
    • and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed, (1 Peter 2:24).

• He Tells Us of His Great and Mighty Abundance of Peace and Truth.
  • “…and I will reveal to them an abundance of peace and truth,” (33:6).
    • “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you. ²⁷ Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful,” (John 14:26-27).

• He Tells Us of His Great and Mighty Restoring of Fortunes.
  • “I will restore the fortunes of Judah and the fortunes of Israel and will rebuild them as they were at first,” (33:7).
    • For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sake He became poor, so that you through His poverty might become rich, (2 Corinthians 8:9).

• He Tells Us of His Great and Mighty Cleansing and Pardon from iniquity and sin.
  • “I will cleanse them from all their iniquity by which they have sinned against Me, and I will pardon all their iniquities by which they have sinned against Me and by which they have transgressed against Me,” (33:8).
    • In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace, (Ephesians 1:7).

• He Tells Us of His Great and Mighty Goodness that brings joy and praise to us and glory to Him before all nations.
  • “It will be to Me a name of joy, praise and glory before all the nations of the earth which will hear of all the good that I do for them, and they will fear and tremble because of all the good and all the peace that I make for it,” (33:9).
    • “Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven,” (Matthew 5:16).

• He Tells Us of His Great and Mighty Marriage Celebration.
  •  “Thus says the Lord, ‘Yet again there will be heard in this place, of which you say, “It is a waste, without man and without beast,” that is, in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem that are desolate, without man and without inhabitant and without beast, ¹¹ the voice of joy and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, the voice of those who say…’” (33:10-11).
    • And a voice came from the throne, saying, “Give praise to our God, all you His bond-servants, you who fear Him, the small and the great.” ⁶ Then I heard something like the voice of a great multitude and like the sound of many waters and like the sound of mighty peals of thunder, saying, “Hallelujah! For the Lord our God, the Almighty, reigns. ⁷ Let us rejoice and be glad and give the glory to Him, for the marriage of the Lamb has come and His bride has made herself ready,” (Revelation 19:5-7).

• He Tells Us of His Great and Mighty Everlasting Lovingkindness, evoking endless thanks and praise.
  • “‘… the voice of joy and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, the voice of those who say, “Give thanks to the Lord of hosts, For the Lord is good, For His lovingkindness is everlasting”; and of those who bring a thank offering into the house of the Lord. For I will restore the fortunes of the land as they were at first,’ says the Lord,’” (33:11).
    • Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, ⁴ just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him. In love ⁵ He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will, ⁶ to the praise of the glory of His grace, which He freely bestowed on us in the Beloved, (Ephesians 1:3-6).

• He Tells Us of His Great and Mighty Protection and Rest for His flock.
  • “Thus says the Lord of hosts, ‘There will again be in this place which is waste, without man or beast, and in all its cities, a habitation of shepherds who rest their flocks. ¹³ In the cities of the hill country, in the cities of the lowland, in the cities of the Negev, in the land of Benjamin, in the environs of Jerusalem and in the cities of Judah, the flocks will again pass under the hands of the one who numbers them,’ says the Lord,” (33:12-13).
    • “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; ²⁸ and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand. ²⁹ My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. ³⁰ I and the Father are one,” (John 10:27-30).

• He Tells Us of His Great and Mighty Salvation and Safety.
  • “In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will dwell in safety…” (33:16).
    • “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. ¹⁷ For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him,” (John 3:16-17).

• He Tells Us of His Great and Mighty Work that transforms us by His Righteousness.
  • “…and this is the name by which she will be called: the Lord is our righteousness,” (33:16).
    • He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him, (2 Corinthians 5:21).

• He Tells Us of His Great and Mighty Eternal Kingdom.
  • For thus says the Lord, “David shall never lack a man to sit on the throne of the house of Israel,” (33:17).
    • But of the Son He says, “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever,
      And the righteous scepter is the scepter of His kingdom,” (Hebrews 1:8).

• He Tells Us of His Great and Mighty Kingdom of Priests.
  • “and the Levitical priests shall never lack a man before Me to offer burnt offerings, to burn grain offerings and to prepare sacrifices continually,” (33:18).
    • But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light, (1 Peter 2:9).

How do we respond to Him Who Tells Us His Great and Mighty Things We Do Not Know?

His Great and Mighty Things can never fully be discovered; truly, they are unsearchable.

Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and unfathomable His ways! ³⁴ For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who became His counselor? ³⁵ Or who has first given to Him that it might be paid back to him again? ³⁶ For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever. Amen, (Romans 11:33-36).

But the amazing truth is there are Great and Mighty Things He has made Known to Us; and those are ours forever, that we would grow in obedience and love for Him and His Word.

“The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our sons forever, that we may observe all the words of this law,” (Deuteronomy 29:29).

He has unveiled much of the mystery of His Great and Mighty Things in Jesus Christ, even though there is still so very much We Do Not Know.

For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I will know fully just as I also have been fully known, (1 Corinthians 13:12).

But we do know that the day is coming when we will know Him fully just as He knows us. Until that day, He Tells Us to Call to Him in prayer and trust Him to Tell Us Great and Mighty Things We Do Not Know.

Today, let’s close with some of Paul’s prayers that call to God, asking Him to Tell Us Great and Mighty Things We Do Not Know, that we would be strengthened in faith to know, believe, and comprehend the Great and Mighty Truths of His Word.

I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, ¹⁹ and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe… (Ephesians 1:18-19).

 that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man, ¹⁷ so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love, ¹⁸ may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, ¹⁹ and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God, (Ephesians 3:16-19).

He has promised that when we call to Him, He will answer us abundantly beyond what we can even think to ask. And as we seek Him in His Holy Word, relying upon His Holy Spirit to open our eyes, in that place of turning our hearts to pursue Him and listen, He promises He will Tell Us Great and Mighty Things We Do Not Know, actually Things we can’t even imagine!

Open my eyes, that I may behold
Wonderful things from Your law, (Psalm 119:18).

“Call to Me and I will answer you, and I will tell you great and mighty things, which you do not know,” (33:3).

Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us, ²¹ to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen, (Ephesians 3:20-21).

Oh, that we would commit to live as His Kingdom of Priests, proclaiming what we Do Know, the Great and Mighty Excellencies of Him Who has called us out of darkness into His marvelous light!

But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light, (1 Peter 2:9).
