And the Lord will be king over all the earth; in that day the Lord will be the only one, and His name the only one, (14:9).
The end times prophecy continues as Zechariah foretells what the Lord will fulfill In That Day. And in today’s chapter, which picks up from where we left off yesterday, seven more times we hear the Lord speak the words, “in that day,” (14:4,6,8,9,12,20,21).
Today begins with His promise of the spoils of war as the Lord will fight in a day of battle for His people (14:1-3). And then we are ushered into the supernatural events that will occur in the natural to prepare for the Lord’s return, when He comes with His holy ones with Him.
You will flee by the valley of My mountains, for the valley of the mountains will reach to Azel; yes, you will flee just as you fled before the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah. Then the Lord, my God, will come, and all the holy ones with Him! (14:5).
These supernatural events are both terrifying and cataclysmic, when In That Day:
the Mount of Olives will be split in its middle (14:4); there will be no light; the luminaries will dwindle… but it will come about that at evening time there will be light (14:6-7); living waters will flow out of Jerusalem… in summer as well as in winter (14:8); all the land will be changed into a plain… but Jerusalem will rise and remain on its site (14:10); the plague with which the Lord will strike all the peoples who have gone to war against Jerusalem (14:12); a great panic from the Lord will fall on them (14:13); the plague on the horse, the mule, the camel, the donkey and all the cattle (14:15).
But truly the most astounding thing of all is, in That Day, He will ultimately and definitively establish Himself as the Only King Over All the Earth.
And the Lord will be king over all the earth; in that day the Lord will be the only one, and His name the only one, (14:9).
And I was struck with this truth… He already Is! He already Is the Only King Over All the Earth… whether people believe it to be so or not.
Consider Him, the Only King Over All the Earth
While some may persist in unbelief, In That Day, every eye will see Him, the Only King Over All the Earth, Who was pierced for the sins of mankind.
Behold, He is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see Him, even those who pierced Him; and all the tribes of the earth will mourn over Him. So it is to be. Amen, (Revelation 1:7).
And though He came as the Lamb of God to take away the sins of the world, In That Day, the Lamb will overcome His enemies because He Is Lord of lords and King of kings; He Is the Only King Over All the Earth.
These will wage war against the Lamb, and the Lamb will overcome them, because He is Lord of lords and King of kings, and those who are with Him are the called and chosen and faithful.” (Revelation 17:14).
And as the Lord is concluding His prophecy given through Zechariah, we are pointed to the consummation of His Story In That Day, when all will see the heavens opened to reveal Him as He really Is, the Only King Over All the Earth.
And I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse, and He who sat on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and wages war. 12 His eyes are a flame of fire, and on His head are many diadems; and He has a name written on Him which no one knows except Himself. 13 He is clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God. 14 And the armies which are in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, were following Him on white horses. 15 From His mouth comes a sharp sword, so that with it He may strike down the nations, and He will rule them with a rod of iron; and He treads the wine press of the fierce wrath of God, the Almighty. 16 And on His robe and on His thigh He has a name written, “KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS,” (Revelation 19:11-16).
- In That Day, He will be the Only King Over All the Earth: the King Who will be the Only One, the Only Name.
- And the Lord will be king over all the earth; in that day the Lord will be the only one, and His name the only one, (14:9).
- In That Day, He will be the Only King Over All the Earth: the King Who will remove the curse to provide His place of security.
- People will live in it, and there will no longer be a curse, for Jerusalem will dwell in security, (14:11).
- In That Day, He will be the Only King Over All the Earth: the King Who will bless His people with great abundance.
- Judah also will fight at Jerusalem; and the wealth of all the surrounding nations will be gathered, gold and silver and garments in great abundance, (14:14).
- In That Day, He will be the Only King Over All the Earth: the King Who will invite those who were once His enemies to worship Him.
- Then it will come about that any who are left of all the nations that went against Jerusalem will go up from year to year to worship the King, the Lord of hosts, and to celebrate the Feast of Booths, (14:16).
- In That Day, He will be the Only King Over All the Earth: the King Who will purify the land and sanctify His entire Kingdom as “Holy to the Lord.”
- In that day there will be inscribed on the bells of the horses, “HOLY TO THE LORD.” And the cooking pots in the Lord’s house will be like the bowls before the altar. 21 Every cooking pot in Jerusalem and in Judah will be holy to the Lord of hosts; and all who sacrifice will come and take of them and boil in them. And there will no longer be a Canaanite in the house of the Lord of hosts in that day, (14:20-21).
How do we respond to Him, the Only King Over All the Earth?
Oh, if ever there was a time for self-examination: does my life reflect that He is my King? Today, He offers the choice; for He is not a King Who forces our allegiance… not yet.
And if we have trusted in His death for our life, when we see Him as He Is, we like the apostle John will surely be undone before Him, the Only King Over All the Earth, as He extends His encouraging Truth and Grace.
When I saw Him, I fell at His feet like a dead man. And He placed His right hand on me, saying, “Do not be afraid; I am the first and the last, 18 and the living One; and I was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of death and of Hades, (Revelation 1:17).
But for those who persist in denying His Truth, the future is both terrifying and cataclysmic.
For In That Day, there will be no choice; for everyone who sees Him as He Is will be unable to do anything but bring glory to the Father as they drop to their knees and confess Jesus as the Only King Over All the Earth.
For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father, (Philippians 2:9-11).
But self-examination is necessary. If we confess Him as Lord now, do we live like He is the Only King Over All our life?
The ways, wants and wealth of this world are always competing for our heart’s affection. And Jesus was adamant, we can’t serve Him as the Only King Over All our heart, if we are giving our heart’s devotion to another.
“No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth,” (Matthew 6:24).
For not only is serving two master an utter impossibility, in reality, this heart competition will result in hating one in order to embrace and obey the preferences of the other.
Oh, that we would embrace Only Him all the days of our life and commit to fervently purify ourselves of any competing attachments in our heart. Let us choose today, and every day, to fix our hope on That Day, when we will see Him just as He is… the Only King Over All the Earth!
Beloved, now we are children of God, and it has not appeared as yet what we will be. We know that when He appears, we will be like Him, because we will see Him just as He is. 3 And everyone who has this hope fixed on Him purifies himself, just as He is pure, (1 John 3:2-3).
