“The blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you live; and when I see the blood I will pass over you, and no plague will befall you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt,” (12:13).
Even typing the words, “Consider the Blood of the Passover Lamb” is daunting. How can one possibly describe what is contained in this story of deliverance and salvation through the shed blood of the Passover Lamb; this magnanimous, life-altering episode, this miraculous story, His story? Suffice it to say mere words cannot. His Word can… and does.
Consider the Blood of the Passover Lamb
- The Blood of the Passover Lamb instituted a new beginning:
This month shall be the beginning of months for you; it is to be the first month of the year to you,“ (12:2).
Jesus answered and said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God,” (John 3:3).
- The Blood of the Passover Lamb was that of an unblemished male:
“Your lamb shall be an unblemished male…” (12:5).
...knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, 19 but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ, (1 Peter 1:18-19).
- The Blood of the Passover Lamb was the only hope of salvation:
“The blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you live; and when I see the blood I will pass over you, and no plague will befall you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt…23 For the Lord will pass through to smite the Egyptians; and when He sees the blood on the lintel and on the two doorposts, the Lord will pass over the door and will not allow the destroyer to come in to your houses to smite you,” (12:13, 23).
“And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved,” (Acts 4:12).
- The Blood of the Passover Lamb provided immediate release from bondage:
The Egyptians urged the people, to send them out of the land in haste, for they said, “We will all be dead.” …50 Then all the sons of Israel did so; they did just as the Lord had commanded Moses and Aaron. 51 And on that same day the Lord brought the sons of Israel out of the land of Egypt by their hosts, (12:33, 50-51).
For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins, (Colossians 1:13-14).
- The Blood of the Passover Lamb would be memorialized forever:
“And you shall observe this event as an ordinance for you and your children forever... 42 It is a night to be observed for the Lord for having brought them out from the land of Egypt; this night is for the Lord, to be observed by all the sons of Israel throughout their generations,” (12:24, 42).
…the Lord Jesus in the night in which He was betrayed took bread; 24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” 25 In the same way He took the cup also after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me,” (1 Corinthians 11:23-25).
Then the seventh angel sounded; and there were loud voices in heaven, saying, “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ; and He will reign forever and ever,” (Revelation 11:15).
How are we to respond to the Blood of the Passover Lamb?
- We must ask ourselves; has His story become our story, will He pass over us because He sees the Blood of the Passover Lamb applied over the doorposts of our hearts?
- ..that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; 10 for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation, (Romans 10:9-10).
- We must place our faith in His provision, our only hope for salvation from judgment; Jesus Christ, our Passover Lamb.
- The next day he saw Jesus coming to him and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29).
- If we have been spared the judgment we deserve, and have experienced so great a salvation by the Blood of the Passover Lamb, let us, like the Israelites, bow low and worship Him:
- ..And the people bowed low and worshiped, (12:27).
Songs of worship can encourage postures of worship. Today we can ponder the timeless truth of Robert Lowry’s song published in 1876, memorializing the Blood of the Passover Lamb, Nothing But the Blood.
May we be filled with amazement and gratitude for the most precious Blood of the Passover Lamb.
