Leviticus 5 … Consider Him Who is Not Guilty

Originally posted: 05/02/2019

The laws for the guilt offerings are comprehensively described. Whether intentionally committed or in ignorance, Scripture makes one thing abundantly clear about all sin… “he was certainly guilty before the Lord,(5:19).

Humanity is swift to cry out against crimes committed against the innocent and the innate desire for justice rises. But in all of mankind, there is only One Who is Not Guilty. Sin is always a crime against Holy God; against Him Who is Not Guilty.

Consider Him Who is Not Guilty

Who is like You among the gods, O Lord?
Who is like You, majestic in holiness,
Awesome in praises, working wonders?
(Exodus 15:11).

“To whom then will you liken Me
That I would be his equal?” says the Holy One,
(Isaiah 40:25).

But your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God,
And your sins have hidden His face from you so that He does not hear,
(Isaiah 59:2).

Your eyes are too pure to approve evil,
And You can not look on wickedness with favor,
(Habakkuk 1:13).

“Now if a person sins and does any of the things which the Lord has commanded not to be done, though he was unaware, still he is guilty and shall bear his punishment. 18 He is then to bring to the priest a ram without defect from the flock, according to your valuation, for a guilt offering. So the priest shall make atonement for him concerning his error in which he sinned unintentionally and did not know it, and it will be forgiven him. 19 It is a guilt offering; he was certainly guilty before the Lord,” (5:17-19).

How do we respond to Him Who is Not Guilty?

Although reconciled by His death and indwelt by His Holy Spirit, the guilt of sin disrupts our fellowship with Holy God. We can experience and enjoy the blessing of the freedom from guilt as we acknowledge and confess our sin to Him Who is Not Guilty.

How blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven,
Whose sin is covered!
How blessed is the man to whom the Lord does not impute iniquity,
And in whose spirit there is no deceit!

When I kept silent about my sin, my body wasted away
Through my groaning all day long.
For day and night Your hand was heavy upon me;
My vitality was drained away as with the fever heat of summer. Selah.
I acknowledged my sin to You,
And my iniquity I did not hide;
I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord”;
And You forgave the guilt of my sin, (Psalm 32:1-5).
