Together with Eleazar the priest and the heads of the tribes of Israel, Joshua leads the nation in the dividing of the territory of their inheritance, according to their families.
Then the second lot fell to Simeon, to the tribe of the sons of Simeon according to their families…
10 Now the third lot came up for the sons of Zebulun according to their families…
17 The fourth lot fell to Issachar, to the sons of Issachar according to their families…
24 Now the fifth lot fell to the tribe of the sons of Asher according to their families…
32 The sixth lot fell to the sons of Naphtali; to the sons of Naphtali according to their families…
40 The seventh lot fell to the tribe of the sons of Dan according to their families… (19:1, 10, 17, 24, 32, 40).
51 These are the inheritances which Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun, and the heads of the households of the tribes of the sons of Israel distributed by lot in Shiloh before the Lord at the doorway of the tent of meeting. So they finished dividing the land, (19:51).
In our western mindset, the casting of lots may bring to mind thoughts of gambling; placing hope in the odds or some indiscriminate occurrence of fate. But there is nothing left to chance, as the Scriptures affirm, for He is Lord Over Every Lot.
Consider Him, Lord Over Every Lot
- He is Lord Over Every Lot: Consecrated by His Command.
- “…and you shall take possession of the land and live in it, for I have given the land to you to possess it. 54 You shall inherit the land by lot according to your families; to the larger you shall give more inheritance, and to the smaller you shall give less inheritance. Wherever the lot falls to anyone, that shall be his. You shall inherit according to the tribes of your fathers,” (Numbers 33:53-54).
- He is Lord Over Every Lot: Determined by His Decision.
- The lot is cast into the lap,
But its every decision is from the Lord, (Proverbs 16:33).
- The lot is cast into the lap,
- He is Lord Over Every Lot: Proven in His Purpose.
- “For I am God, and there is no other;
I am God, and there is no one like Me,
10 Declaring the end from the beginning,
And from ancient times things which have not been done,
Saying, ‘My purpose will be established,
And I will accomplish all My good pleasure,’” (Isaiah 46:9-10).

How do we respond to Him, Lord Over Every Lot?
Today, may His truth take hold in our hearts, minds, and entire beings; He is Lord Over Every Lot; He is Sovereign, He can be trusted, and His purpose will be accomplished!
As we consider Him, Lord Over Every Lot, let us ask Him to grow our faith to believe and trust His unfathomable ways.
Though I walk in the midst of trouble, You will revive me;
You will stretch forth Your hand against the wrath of my enemies,
And Your right hand will save me.
8 The Lord will accomplish what concerns me;
Your lovingkindness, O Lord, is everlasting;
Do not forsake the works of Your hands, (Psalm 138:7-8).
“For nothing will be impossible with God,” (Luke 1:37).
Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us,21 to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen, (Ephesians 3:20-21).
Whatever our Lot in life: our struggles or blessings, our trials or successes, our sufferings or comforts, He is Lord Over Every Lot. He is Sovereign, He can be trusted, and His purpose will be accomplished!
And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. 29 For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren, (Romans 8:28-29).
