“The Lord therefore be judge and decide between you and me; and may He see and plead my cause and deliver me from your hand,” (24:15).

David had his chance, and who would blame him if he took it? Even his men encouraged him to rid himself of his enemy; proclaiming it was the Lord who had given him this terrific opportunity for revenge.

The men of David said to him, “Behold, this is the day of which the Lord said to you, ‘Behold; I am about to give your enemy into your hand, and you shall do to him as it seems good to you,’” (24:4).

David may have wrestled with the decision, but ultimately left it with the only One qualified to judge, in the hands of Him Who Pleads Our Cause.

Consider Him Who Pleads Our Cause

David paints a picture of a courtroom, before a Holy and Just Judge Who also intervenes as his Defending Attorney. All is in His Hands; all is to be defended and decided by Him alone.

• He Pleads Our Cause; He alone is our faithful Intercessor.

• He Pleads Our Cause; He alone is our Deliverer.
  • “…and deliver me from your hand.”

How do we respond to Him Who Pleads Our Cause?

We begin by placing our faith in the atoning sacrifice of the Son Who Pleads Our Cause before the Father, that our sins may be forgiven and we may be justified by His blood.

Who will bring a charge against God’s elect? God is the one who justifies; ³⁴ who is the one who condemns? Christ Jesus is He who died, yes, rather who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us. ³⁵ Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?… ³⁷ But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us, (Romans 8:33-35, 37).

When we trust Jesus Christ as our Savior, we can forever rest in Him Who Pleads Our Cause.

Therefore He is able also to save forever those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them, (Hebrews 7:25).

But being a born again child of the King does not eliminate suffering, persecution and hardships; we live in a fallen world where sickness, injustice and wickedness abound. And when our suffering comes at the hands of wickedness, much faith and discipline is needed to wait on the Lord.

David demonstrated such faith and discipline. Though he had been anointed as king to replace Saul, he would wait on the Lord’s way and time rather than take matters into his own hands. Merely taking the edge of Saul’s robe in his own hand bothered David’s conscience, and he refused to act in the place of God.

“As the proverb of the ancients says, ‘Out of the wicked comes forth wickedness’; but my hand shall not be against you,” (24:13).

It comes down to this for each one of us… can He be trusted to Plead Our Cause?

When we are persecuted or suffer unjustly, may we grow in our faith to trust the future and vengeance into His hands. Let us learn from David’s own prayers to trust Him Who Pleads Our Cause, with our families, our health, our ministries, our circumstances, our very lives.

Plead my cause, O Lord, with those who strive with me;
Fight against those who fight against me.
² Take hold of shield and buckler,
And stand up for my help.
³ Also draw out the spear,
And stop those who pursue me.
Say to my soul,
“I am your salvation,” (Psalm 35:1-3 NKJV).

David trusted the Lord to provide the assurance of His salvation to calm and fortify his soul. Let us also learn from David, that we would find our strength in the perfect provision He has so graciously provided in His Living and Reviving Word.

Plead my cause and redeem me;
Revive me according to Your word, (Psalm 119:54).

May we so grow in our faith to trust Him despite the evil around us and live to bring Him glory as we wait on Him Who Pleads Our Cause.

Do not fret because of evildoers,
Be not envious toward wrongdoers.
² For they will wither quickly like the grass
And fade like the green herb.
³ Trust in the Lord and do good;
Dwell in the land and cultivate faithfulness, (Psalm 37:1-3).
