Psalm 36 … Consider His Place of Plenty

They drink their fill of the abundance of Your house;
And You give them to drink of the river of Your delights,
(36:8).

Major descriptors about Him immediately flooded my thoughts. Abundance, vast, enormous, boundless, colossal, immense, limitless, eternal. Then more. Satisfaction, contentment, joy, pleasure. Goodness, grace, generous, kindness, mercy, love. Safety, security, shelter. Invaluable, priceless, precious, treasured. Sufficient, satisfying, health, growth. Life and light.

And as I contemplated this, I  journaled words that flowed and wondered how I might ever phrase this in a concise caption to consider. And as though to sum it all up, the thought came: the place of plenty. And this thought immediately brought me to the only One Who is able to invite us and open the door to enter, experience and live in His Place of Plenty, Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.

Consider His Place of Plenty

Your lovingkindness, O Lord, extends to the heavens,
Your faithfulness reaches to the skies.
Your righteousness is like the mountains of God;
Your judgments are like a great deep.
O Lord, You preserve man and beast.
How precious is Your lovingkindness, O God!
And the children of men take refuge in the shadow of Your wings.
They drink their fill of the abundance of Your house;
And You give them to drink of the river of Your delights.
For with You is the fountain of life;
In Your light we see light,
(36:5-9).

  • His Place of Plenty in His Lovingkindness
    • Your lovingkindness, O Lord, extends to the heavens,
      • But when the kindness of God our Savior and His love for mankind appeared, He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, (Titus 3:4-6).
  • His Place of Plenty in His Faithfulness
    • Your faithfulness reaches to the skies.
      • If we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself, (2 Timothy 2:13).
  • His Place of Plenty in His Righteousness
    • Your righteousness is like the mountains of God;
      • But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption, (1 Corinthians 1:30).
  • His Place of Plenty in His Judgments
    • Your judgments are like a great deep.
      • “For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. 18 He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God,”  (John 3:17-18).
  • His Place of Plenty in His Care
    • Lord, You preserve man and beast.
      • “I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep,” (John 10:11).
  • His Place of Plenty in His Value
    • How precious [valuable] is Your lovingkindness, O God!
      • knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, 19 but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ, (1 Peter 1:18-19).
  • His Place of Plenty in His Protection
    • And the children of men take refuge in the shadow of Your wings.
      • What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us? 32 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things? (Romans 8:31-32).
  • His Place of Plenty in His Provision
    • They drink their fill…
      • “Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. 38 He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water,’” (John 7:37-38).
  • His Place of Plenty in His Presence
    • …of the abundance of Your house;
      • “…and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age,” (Matthew 28:20).
  • His Place of Plenty in His Joy
    • And You give them to drink of the river of Your delights.
      • “These things I have spoken to you so that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be made full,” (John 15:11).
  • His Place of Plenty in His Life
    • For with You is the fountain of life;
      • “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly,” (John 10:10).
  • His Place of Plenty in His Light
    • In Your light we see light.
      • Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life,” (John 8:12).

How do we respond to His Place of Plenty?

It’s almost just too much to take in. Of course it is! His Place of Plenty is infinitely wonderful and perfect. When we place our faith in Jesus Christ for salvation, every need we have is under His authority; everything we need is in Jesus. And our needs are not merely met; they are richly and abundantly supplied when we come, by faith, to His Place of Plenty.

And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus, (Philippians 4:19).

But Jesus instructs us that we are not to seek after the supply; but we are to seek His kingdom and His righteousness.

“But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you,” (Matthew 6:33).

Today, let us determine to trust all our needs to Him and daily seek His Kingdom and His Righteousness.

Oh, that we would leave the matters beyond our control in His capable and trustworthy hands. For we know that in His Place of Plenty, He will meet our needs according to His Lovingkindness, Faithfulness and Righteousness. We know we can trust His Judgments and Care, proven in the precious Value of His blood sacrifice. We know that we will find His Protection and Provision in His Presence. And we know that when we are in Him, we have His Joy, His Life and His Light. What else could we possibly need?

Oh, that it would become our way of life, that Christ, our King, would be at home in our hearts through faith; that we would spend time with Him in His Word and in prayer, depending on His Holy Spirit to fill us to all the fullness of God, that we would daily dwell with Him in His Place of Plenty.

so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19 and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God, (Ephesians 3:17-19).
