Ezekiel 27 … Consider Him Who Abundantly Satisfies

“When your wares went out from the seas,
You satisfied many peoples;
With the abundance of your wealth and your merchandise
You enriched the kings of earth,”
(27:33).

Ezekiel has just declared the fatal blow that is heading towards Tyre.

I will bring terrors on you and you will be no more; though you will be sought, you will never be found again,” declares the Lord God, (Ezekiel 26:21).

And it most probably sounded preposterous to the hearers; for Tyre was a thriving and influential force as a trade center to the east. Their wealth and plenteous stockpile of goods and wares were sought after by every surrounding nation. And their pride and greed consumed them with merciless eagerness for what they would get out of the catastrophic fall of Jerusalem so as to add more to their affluent fortunes. And for this God had declared His wrath was coming.

“Son of man, because Tyre has said concerning Jerusalem, ‘Aha, the gateway of the peoples is broken; it has opened to me. I shall be filled, now that she is laid waste,’ therefore thus says the Lord God, ‘Behold, I am against you, O Tyre, and I will bring up many nations against you, as the sea brings up its waves,’” (Ezekiel 26:2-3).

Their misplaced hope was in all that they had built themselves; and they were convinced that because they were so completely and perfectly situated, so pleasing to the nations, surely their beauty, fame, and prosperity would be celebrated forever.

…“O Tyre, you have said, ‘I am perfect in beauty.’
“Your borders are in the heart of the seas;
Your builders have perfected your beauty,”
(27:3-4).

But rather than a celebration, God calls Ezekiel to take up a funeral dirge, a lamentation about the death of Tyre.

Moreover, the word of the Lord came to me saying, “And you, son of man, take up a lamentation over Tyre; and say to Tyre, who dwells at the entrance to the sea, merchant of the peoples to many coastlands, ‘Thus says the Lord God, (27:1-2).

Recognition is given to the great splendor of Tyre, comparing her to a merchant ship of the sea constructed from the finest of materials; and as the recognition continues, five times the Lord God repeats His mention of the abundance of all kinds of wealth that many sought after in trade.

At this point in their history, Tyre was at the top of her game. Being laid waste to never be found again may have seemed like a far-fetched notion; but as we learned yesterday, God’s Word would be brought to pass 250 years later when Alexander the Great constructed a causeway out into the Mediterranean, reaching the unreachable rock-island of Tyre, breaking down her walls and bringing a furious halt to her world-wide trade forever. And in their destruction they would know He Is the LORD.

“They will destroy the walls of Tyre and break down her towers; and I will scrape her debris from her and make her a bare rock. She will be a place for the spreading of nets in the midst of the sea, for I have spoken,’ declares the Lord God, ‘and she will become spoil for the nations. Also her daughters who are on the mainland will be slain by the sword, and they will know that I am the Lord,” (Ezekiel 26:4-6).

And there it is again, “they will know that I am the Lord;His persistence in making Himself known to those who had persistently trusted in their own abundance of wealth. For if they would but humble themselves, repent and turn to Him in faith, they would come to know Him Who Abundantly Satisfies.

How do we respond to Him Who Abundantly Satisfies?

The above ten passages offer only the smallest fraction of the Abundant Satisfaction He so graciously supplies. But the sad truth is, we too can be like Tyre, setting our sights on accumulating the abundance of wealth from the world and becoming dissatisfied with the Abundant Satisfaction so richly provided in Him.

Below are ten more verses that will lead us in setting our eyes on Him Who Abundantly Supplies.

Oh that we would make it our habit to look to Him Who Abundantly Satisfies before our day gets going.

O satisfy us in the morning with Your lovingkindness,
That we may sing for joy and be glad all our days,
(Psalm 90:14).

Let us take time to daily bless the Lord by intentionally remembering the many blessings and benefits we have in Him Who Abundantly Satisfies.

Bless the Lord, O my soul,
And all that is within me, bless His holy name.
Bless the Lord, O my soul,
And forget none of His benefits;
Who pardons all your iniquities,
Who heals all your diseases;
Who redeems your life from the pit,
Who crowns you with lovingkindness and compassion;
Who satisfies your years with good things,
So that your youth is renewed like the eagle,
(Psalm 103:1-5).

Let us listen carefully to Him Who Abundantly Satisfies, that we would not waste our resources on that which is worthless.

“Why do you spend money for what is not bread,
And your wages for what does not satisfy?
Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good,
And delight yourself in abundance,”
 (Isaiah 55:2).

Let us ask Him Who Abundantly Satisfies to grow our hunger and thirst for His righteousness.

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied,” (Matthew 5:6).

Let us trust Him Who Abundantly Satisfies all our needs as we seek His kingdom and righteousness above all else.

“But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you,” (Matthew 6:33).

Oh, let us be on guard against the worries and desires that threaten to choke out the Word of Him Who Abundantly Satisfies.

“but the worries of the world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things enter in and choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful,” (Mark 4:19).

Let us be on guard against greed so as to clearly see our true abundance in Him Who Abundantly Satisfies.

Then He said to them, “Beware, and be on your guard against every form of greed; for not even when one has an abundance does his life consist of his possessions,” (Luke 12:15).

Let us come to Him every day for our sustenance, that we would be fully satisfied in Him Who Abundantly Satisfies, and strengthened against the temptation to fill ourselves with the empty promises of gratification the world constantly dangles before us.

Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst,” (John 6:35).

Oh, that we would learn the secret of contentment as we rely solely on the strength of Him Who Abundantly Satisfies.

Not that I speak from want, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. 12 I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity; in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need. 13 I can do all things through Him who strengthens me, (Philippians 4:11-13).

Lord Jesus, thank You that You will never desert us, You will never leave us. How could we possibly want anything more? Thank You for the promise of Your perfect presence and provision. Please Lord, we don’t ever want to become discontent with Your blessings and smug in our own abundance of wealth, as if we had anything good apart from You. Today and every day, we choose to bless You and praise You, for we know that it is You, and You alone, Who Abundantly Satisfies our every need.

Make sure that your character is free from the love of money, being content with what you have; for He Himself has said, “I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you,” (Hebrews 13:6).
